We’ve been keeping a pretty big secret 👀 (or at least, trying to!). For the past three years, our R&D team has been working on what might be our most ambitious project yet: a Swiss hard cheese made from locally grown organic lupins 🫛 After a LOT of research, failed experiments, tiny breakthroughs, ripening, tasting and trying again… the cheese exists, and it tastes pretty damn good 🥹 Now we want to take it from R&D to the shelves, while building the whole value chain around it: Swiss farmers growing lupins, local processing, and cheesemakers using their existing knowledge, skills and infrastructure to turn them into cheese. Because changing our food system doesn’t mean throwing away our traditions: we can keep the craft, the people and the know-how, but we ditch the animal exploitation. We’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to make the next step possible, and we’d love for you to be part of it 💛 We’ve always preferred relying on our community rather than outside investors: by us, for us. We dug up some old photos to take you on a trip down memory lane with us! The ethics that we founded New Roots on are still at the heart of everything we do. Justice for all starts with justice for the most vulnerable. Looking back at how it unfolded, we feel waves of gratitude for our community not just for believing in our dream, but for shaping a kinder world all together 🤍 (no sarcastic caption for you guys today, we’re in our feelings!!)

In our journey to make plant-based cheese, we have heard it all. But the line that comes back the most is: “But cows have to be milked!” And every time, we think: do they though? (Spoiler alert: we know the answer). Because milk doesn’t just “come from cows”, it comes from mothers. Cows don’t have to be milked any more than humans, dogs, giraffes, or any other mammal minding their own business have to be milked. The reason cows are milked is because we have turned their reproductive labour into a product; and then a very powerful marketing team convinced the world that humans couldn’t possibly live without drinking the milk of another species. But if we believe in bodily autonomy, then we have to ask where that belief begins, where it ends, and why it so often stops at the border of our own species. Liberation cannot be selective: a world built on domination will always find new bodies to dominate.

Les partenariats vertueux sont ceux qui façonnent le monde en le rendant meilleur ♥️

Depuis sa création, notre @asso_coexister collabore avec @new__roots sous différentes formes. Aujourd’hui, cette entreprise 🇨🇭 est sur le point de commercialiser un produit révolutionnaire dans l’alimentation végétale : un fromage à pâte dure, à base de lupin suisse, affiné selon les savoir-faire des fromagers, et sans souffrance animale ! 😋

You did that: we reached CHF80’000 in two weeks!! We don’t have enough words to say how grateful we are, not just for the financial support, but also for all the trust you have put into this project. We are so grateful for your support, and we can’t wait for you to try the cheese!

Every additional franc will help us go further: perfect the technology, scale up production, onboard more farmers into the project, and give the cheese the communication and launch it deserves.

Less than two weeks ago, we introduced our most ambitious project to our community: a hard cheese made from local organic lupin; grown in Switzerland by Swiss farmers, made in Switzerland by Swiss cheesemakers. We opened our doors so you could try it, and we launched a crowdfunding campaign to help us with the last push (onboarding more farmers, continuing the breeding and R&D work, do the first scale-up rounds, develop packaging, etc). It’s been less than two weeks, and we’ve already reached 80% of our crowdfunding goal. It’s hard to find the words to describe all the feelings we’re feeling at once: the relief that you like the cheese; the pride of having (almost) succeeded at something that, at times, felt near impossible; the nervousness of the next steps; and last but not least, the endless gratitude towards our community for all the support, the trust, and the love. This project is a lot more than launching and selling a product. We want to show that Swiss cheese traditions can evolve away from animal exploitation and environmental damage, without losing the taste, texture and rituals attached to it. We had the great honour to sample our new cheese to you over the weekend: a traditional hard cheese made from lupins grown on Swiss soils by Swiss farmers, and turned into cheese by Swiss cheesemakers in our cheesemaking factory 🧀🇨🇭 We’re not gonna lie, we were sweating a little. It’s been years in the making, and even though our team loves it, we didn’t know what the outside world (that’s you) would think. We got hundreds of positive reactions (we could only capture a few on camera, a lot of you are camera shy 🫣), and a couple “not great” ones. But as my mum, your mum, and everybody’s mum always said “you can’t please everyone”, so we’re pretty happy (and very relieved 😮‍💨). Now we just need one tiny little push so we can launch it. And for that, we need your support. We may have made a collage with the sole purpose of giving you FOMO if you didn’t come to our party (we claim to make good vegan cheese, we never said we’re emotionally mature) 😇 But seriously, we ate too much cheese, we played hard (without having to work hard), we met so many cool people, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came! We’re particularly excited about how much everyone loved the hard cheese *big sigh of relief*. If you came: thank you, come back soon! If you didn’t: do better next time (our arms are always open, even if we’re a little bitter right now) ♥️
