tldr

I went to the second Black Women Rising Gala, and it was such a beautiful evening.

Black Women Rising is a cancer charity supporting Black women as they navigate cancer, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.

And before anyone starts, it’s not about segregation. It’s about recognising that Black women’s experiences within healthcare can be different. Our symptoms and concerns can be dismissed or overlooked, and inequalities in diagnosis, treatment and outcomes still exist.

With 1 in 2 people in the UK expected to develop cancer during their lifetime, having the right support around you matters.

What I love about Black Women Rising is the community they’ve created. Black women from African, Caribbean and other BAME backgrounds, with different lives and experiences, brought together and supported through something incredibly difficult.

The evening was beautiful, uplifting and, at moments, incredibly emotional. Hearing some of the women’s stories was difficult, but it really brought home just how important the work this charity does is.
