Going through the Shop Talk archives and couldn’t help but smile when we came across this one. ❤️

Some conversations just age REALLY well.

John sat down with Marlana, Shaina, and Victoria to talk about what it actually takes to build a successful career behind the chair, and spoiler: it’s not just getting really good at hair.

They talk about burnout, mindset, healthy competition, continuing to learn, creating an experience people want to come back to, and the relationships that ultimately built their careers.

At the time, Marlana and Shaina were producing around $185K behind the chair while working four days a week. But one of our favorite parts of this conversation is hearing what was actually happening BEHIND those numbers. You won’t be disappointed in listening to what they have to say 💕

However, if the entire strategy is thinking about it really hard and hoping FUTURE YOU just figures it out, we may have found the problem…

It might just be floating around with no job, no calendar invite, and absolutely no idea what it’s supposed to be doing on Tuesday when you’re cooking dinner, running a business, and trying to make time for the gym… you know, the day when you’re living in that gap between today and the goal..

Good intentions are lovely…. But they are notoriously bad project managers and certainly aren’t working overtime to check things off the to do list 😬

This podcast conversation with Amber Pope is such a good reminder that culture is built in the small moments 💕

It’s built when your team actually knows where the company is going.
When you’re willing to talk about the numbers instead of keeping everything behind a mysterious owner curtain.
When feedback doesn’t automatically mean somebody is in trouble.
When people know there’s a place for them to grow, lead, ask questions, screw something up, learn from it, and keep moving.
And maybe most importantly, when the leader is still willing to say, “I’m learning too.”

Amber and her husband Chet have spent nearly a decade building Salon27, recently won NAHA’s Inspiring Salon of the Year, and now have a second location dedicated to developing newer talent.

What I loved most about this conversation wasn’t the trophy or even the growth.
It was how often Amber came back to the PEOPLE.
Knowing them. Talking to them. Being transparent with them. Creating structure for them. Giving them ownership. And being willing to change as they change.

Because great leadership isn’t standing at the front of the room convincing everyone to follow you.

Sometimes it looks a whole lot more like walking back to the end of the line and nudging the next person forward. 🦆❤️

This is a really, really good one for anyone leading a salon, spa, team, or honestly… humans in general.

I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about what real personal growth actually looks like when you get past the quotes, the podcasts, the books, and the “I should probably work on that” list….

And that’s a big part of why I’m so excited for what we’re building at 124GO for January 💙

A 10-week mastermind around John Maxwell’s 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth that gives people space to slow down, get honest about where they are, learn alongside other people, and actually create a plan for how they want to grow next.

We will be applying principals, reflecting on the journey, and actually be in conversation and community with each other the whole time…. And probably after becasue I won’t be able to let you go 😂💙

I’m so excited to be coaching and facilitating this one because I really believe growth gets different when it stops being something you hope happens and starts becoming something you intentionally make room for.

I have limited availability for events. I know you do too and it’s likely because you are busy with LIFE and work. So adding in somewhere else to be is a lot. AND I know that it’s something you also likely love 😍 Because like me, you are fueled by people.

I’m so excited @susanhaise said yes when I invited her to speak at Leading Forward because I knew that she would be so relatable to so many of the leaders who follow me. She is a badass and you are going to love not only listening to her share, but having the opportunity to ask her questions and truly talk to her.
