Very sad to hear this about Dean. My heart goes out to his family, the Aussie Island crew and all of his many friends.
My brother and I always looked up to Dean. He was a huge influence on our lives from the time we started surfing at 12 years old. Lee Cox owned Aussie Island in Raleigh and would talk my mom into letting us skip school when the waves were good so we could head down to Wrightsville to surf and visit the shop. Once we got there, we’d link up with Dean and his brother Jim.
They’d take us out when it was big, paddle over to Masonboro with us in the middle of winter, and introduced us to snowboarding. Dean was like the big brother we never had and we truly loved him.
When I graduated high school and moved to Wilmington, I really didn’t know anyone other than Dean and Jim through the shop. They always looked out for us. They sponsored me when I probably didn’t deserve it, gave me a sense of belonging, and always made me feel like I was part of the family. I’ll never forget that.
I can only hope that when my time comes, I’ll have left the kind of positive impact on people’s lives that Dean did. Dean was nothing but love. The dude didn’t have a mean bone in his body and genuinely cared about and took care of so many people.
Dean, please give my brother and my dad a big hug for me. We’ll see you on the other side, my friend.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since you left us. It still feels like yesterday when we had to let you go.

I still feel you with me every single day. I know you weren’t meant for this world, and I know you’re looking down on me, giving me the strength to keep going.

For some reason, I woke up yesterday convinced it was August 1st. I spent the whole morning thinking about you, celebrating you, and getting myself ready for what I knew would be a tough day. Then I realized it was actually the wrong day but it made me realize it’s never really just August 1st. I miss you every day, every week, every month, and sometimes every single minute.

I took your board out for a surf today, and I swear it rides better every time. I’ve probably had 50 plus boards over the past 10 years, and I’ve even had a replica made but I still haven’t found one that rides as good as yours. I guess some things just can’t be replaced.

I’m so grateful for the time we had together. I just wish we had been better to each other and to ourselves back then. I know we were both fighting our own battles. I know I’ll see you again someday.

We love you, Sausage. We miss you every day.
