Join us on Friday, September 4, from 6–8 PM at Nomadic Bookshop for a memorial reading celebrating the life of Susana Praver-Pérez. The evening will include a small number of planned readings, followed by an open mic for those who wish to share a memory, reflection, or words in honor of Susana. We will also create a temporary altar in Susana’s honor. You are welcome to bring flowers, photographs, or small objects of remembrance to add to it. Please join us as we gather in love, grief, and gratitude to honor Susana’s life, work, and the lasting mark she made on all who knew her. by @nomadicpress

We are heartbroken to learn that @la.doctora.susana Susana Praver-Perez, beloved Nomadic Press author, poet, teacher, and friend, has joined the ancestors.

Susana’s work carried immense tenderness, precision, and courage. In Hurricanes, Love Affairs, and Other Disasters, she gave us poems that moved through love, memory, family, migration, grief, and survival with a voice at once intimate, heart-centered, and expansive. We had many warm phone calls together about a new collection she was working on that would eventually become Return Against the Flow.

We are deeply grateful and honored to have been part of Susana’s literary journey and to have published her work. She was also a friend. Her writing will continue to meet readers with its warmth, clarity, humor, and hard-won wisdom.

Our hearts are with Susana’s loved ones, friends, students, fellow writers, and all who were moved by her presence and her poetry.

Rest in power, Susana. Your words remain with us.

We will be organizing a memorial gathering on Friday, 09/04, at @nomadicbookshop . More info to come.

Oakland arts and culture deserve stable funding.

When the Coliseum sale finalizes, Oakland will receive a new recurring revenue stream from the deal: 6% of ticket sales from the arena and stadium. City staff estimate that could bring in roughly $3 million every year.

That money should go back to the people who make Oakland Oakland.

This is a real opportunity to create dedicated, long-term funding for artists, youth arts programs, cultural workers, neighborhood-based arts organizations, festivals, public art, and the creative communities that carry this city’s history, spirit, and future.

Oakland cannot keep celebrating culture while cutting the people and programs that create it.

Tell City Council: dedicate the 6% Coliseum ticket-revenue share to Oakland arts and culture.

We need to restore local cultural funding, protect staff capacity, and invest in Oakland’s creative future.
