Because We Need Each Other: A Zine, Perspective, & Practice is available now as a digital download and a print booklet from @nomadicpress.

Written by @kazu_haga, @shilpaminajain, @ccccsealia, and @e_sassnyc, illustrated and laid out by @cattailscomix, the zine provides a perspective on how we can move through conflict generatively, deepen relationships, and strengthen our movements, even in times of intensity and strain.

So excited for the launch of our Because We Need Each Other zine!!! If you are in Oakland, please stop by!

Because We Need Each Other is a movement based intervention against cancel culture, call-out culture, and other harmful responses to intra-movement conflicts.

What began as a series of gatherings bringing together movement leaders has grown into a series of articles co-published by Convergence Magazine and The Forge Organizing.

This event will celebrate the launch of the BWNEO Zine, published by Nomadic Press, is full of frameworks and resources to support our movements remember that we need each other for our liberation.

Join us for a discussion with two of the Zine’s co-authors - Shilpa Jain and myself, and illustrator Kylie Tseng, moderated by Cayden Mak of Convergence.

A bookish car wash?! Drive through on Sunday, August 30, from 11 AM – 4 PM at 100 Grand Avenue in Oakland for a car wash supporting our local non-profit bookstore, Nomadic Bookshop. Get an exterior wash for $25 by a bunch of bookworms and buy a few books while you wait. All proceeds go to support our bookshop, which offers free-to-low cost event space to a number of community groups throughout the month (in addition to great books!)

Oakland arts and culture deserve stable funding.

When the Coliseum sale finalizes, Oakland will receive a new recurring revenue stream from the deal: 6% of ticket sales from the arena and stadium. City staff estimate that could bring in roughly $3 million every year.

That money should go back to the people who make Oakland Oakland.

This is a real opportunity to create dedicated, long-term funding for artists, youth arts programs, cultural workers, neighborhood-based arts organizations, festivals, public art, and the creative communities that carry this city’s history, spirit, and future.

Oakland cannot keep celebrating culture while cutting the people and programs that create it.

Tell City Council: dedicate the 6% Coliseum ticket-revenue share to Oakland arts and culture.

We need to restore local cultural funding, protect staff capacity, and invest in Oakland’s creative future.

Nazelah Jamison (@supernaz_your_superfriend) is a Bay Area-based performance poet, author, actor, vocalist and emcee. Her first book of poetry, Evolutionary Heart, was released on Nomadic Press in 2016, and reprinted and re-released on Black Lawrence Press in Fall 2023.

Her work can also be found in The Racket Journal: Issue Fifteen (2020), Culture Counts Magazine (2021), La Raiz Magazine (2022), Better Ancestors, Sparkle + Blink 115 (Quiet Lightning 2022) and others. She is the 2026 Janice Mirikitani Poet Theologian-in-Residence at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco.

In her spare time, Nazelah enjoys writing horror screenplays and saving the day. She hosts Thee Virtual Open Mic every 1st & 3rd Friday on zoom, and gives the best hugs in the Bay Area.

Bay book fest ! This is the 3rd year in a row that I’ve attended and honestly this year was my favorite. I really like how everything was set up, it felt less overwhelming and I was able to see a lot of smaller presses that I love to visit like @nomadicpress & some local bookshops.

I made it a point to go seek out the @librofm booth that always has a cute tote bag free for all members. I love my audiobooks so I now have quite the librofm tote collection.

If you’re in the bay and haven’t attended the fest, I recommend checking it out next year!
