Through The Deep

2026, oil on panel

The first oil painting I've been able to finish since November last year, I feel like I've been plugged back in to my own body 🫀

P.s, big thanks to the beautiful Luke for letting your face be lent to a painting xxx by @nooka_shepherd

Hello to new faces! Here is a quick aside, about and around:

Nooka Shepherd is a prattling jackanape, a yellow-bellied feverfew, several tonnes of eels, a hivic swarm of notmuch, a dollop (or, indeed, dollup) of hot eggs, a cold egg, several feet under, a clutchbucket and fire brained ant's nest. They also like to make things (a lot).

Thank you all very much for very kind words recently, it really is so lovely, I am very grateful and touched

We are still under the spell of what we encountered at @nooka_shepherd ‘s studio this week…✨

Nooka is a multi-media artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and embroidery. Finding inspiration in regional folklore and mythology, Nooka processes their understanding of the animated natural world through vein-like mark-making and symmetry, pulling on the threads of femininity, matrilineal ancestry, and fertility.

Their work serves as a conduit to connect us back beyond our own histories to our shared animal, plant, and microbial ancestors.

It was magical to spend time looking through Nooka’s incredible new body of work—pieces on paper and board, and intricate, articulated puppet-like wall hangings that are inhabited with spirit and life.

💫Nooka will be exhibiting at Field System gallery this winter.💫

Exhibition Dates: 26th November 2026 – 3rd January 2027 at Field System, 13 West Street, Ashburton, Devon
Opening Celebration: Thursday, 26th November, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (All welcome!)

This August, for the entire month of August, I had the honour and pleasure to be an artist in residence at The Place of Silence (@theplaceofsilence), hosted by Riccardo Freddo (@ricfreddo) in Umbria, Italy, the only region of Italy to be landlocked, cupped in the palms of forested mountains.
This residency has been an incredible gift; the beauty of the region, the depth of history, religion and an artistic, decorative culture spanning thousands of years, from the craft of the Etruscans to the artistic patronage of the Catholic church, all swam and spiralled together into a glowing braid of faith, beauty and memory.
Riccardo is a remarkable man with a remarkable vision, growing something very meaningful at the Place of Silence. A true contemporary patron, this entire residency had been a rare and precious opportunity. I'm very grateful, and very excited to see what threads of thought come out of the time spent at this residency, through my hands and into my work.

More pictures to come because honestly it was just so intensely magical and one series of images just isn't going to sum it up xxx taken in Perugia, Umbria, italy by @nooka_shepherd

Birth of the Second Eve
2026
Watercolour and oil pastel on paper

The hills of the earth are pregnant and Eve, the woman who is the serpent who is the fruit, comes again. Colonialism and patriarchy crushed into fertiliser beneath feet that love the earth and hands that exist to destroy, transform and create. Shed and reform. In all this, the serpent is your ally. by @nooka_shepherd
