We are still under the spell of what we encountered at @nooka_shepherd ‘s studio this week…✨

Nooka is a multi-media artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and embroidery. Finding inspiration in regional folklore and mythology, Nooka processes their understanding of the animated natural world through vein-like mark-making and symmetry, pulling on the threads of femininity, matrilineal ancestry, and fertility.

Their work serves as a conduit to connect us back beyond our own histories to our shared animal, plant, and microbial ancestors.

It was magical to spend time looking through Nooka’s incredible new body of work—pieces on paper and board, and intricate, articulated puppet-like wall hangings that are inhabited with spirit and life.

💫Nooka will be exhibiting at Field System gallery this winter.💫

Exhibition Dates: 26th November 2026 – 3rd January 2027 at Field System, 13 West Street, Ashburton, Devon
Opening Celebration: Thursday, 26th November, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (All welcome!)

With thanks to India @sohorevue for her help and support.

Shug is excited to announce its upcoming group show ‘Supernova’.

An all-female exhibition showcasing work by some of the most exciting emerging contemporary artists working today.

Supernova serves as a dual metaphor: it represents both a cosmic explosion of luminosity and an inherent transformation of navigating the world as a woman. The artwork moves away from traditional, rigid definitions of gendered representation. Instead, it embraces ambiguity, portraying the female experience as vast and fluid, yet deeply nuanced.

Through a nuanced blending of figuration, landscape, and still life, Supernova invites viewers to an ethereal and intimate curation of paintings and sculpture. Strong, silky bodies, objects and reflective textures collide in a wondrous kaleidoscope of internal power and radiance.

Private view next Friday 14th 7-11pm at the Royal George in Deptford.

For the exhibition, @courtneysnowdrawings and I asked the contributing artists some questions. About material circumstances and individual practice, about what they accept and what they reject ....
We also invited artists whose practice extends to text to share some writing. You'll be able to read all of that from next Friday when the show opens!

See you there!
