Had to get a new one. Had to pay a fine.

Look at me, and my first big-boy acquisition.

I haven’t been following Kumar @kumarmisalstudio for long, but definitely with severe intensity. He’s mostly been outside my budget, and for good reason. I had written about him for a cover of Art Mumbai @artmumbaiofficial last year and I’m glad to announce that I’m putting my money where my mouth is.

My last conversation with him was in February during India Art Fair @indiaartfair , and although the discussion was cut short, it left me super enthusiastic about an artist with intention and urgency having a practice that is evolving, growing, and pushing boundaries. Sometimes you can just feel that an artist will change the way you look at the world, and I am looking forward to his contributions in the future.

Thank you to @smeetaxi and @artandcharlie for introducing me to such a brilliant guy.

Thank you very much @artindiamagazine and @vadehraartgallery

Thank you @sreyansisingh and the team for making this an exceptionally smooth process.

To all my other friends whose works were in the show, I’ll “catch em all” whenever my pocket is heavy enough to do so.

Not long ago, at 20, I started collecting art from my friends. The bulk of what I have today, in terms of a collection, are from exchanges. Helps to have artist friends of course.

For anyone who is on the edge thinking that collecting art takes millions, just go to an artist and make an offer. Or go to a gallery and ask for directions. It’s easy. AND VERY REWARDING !!!

Also, i don’t know why I chose the Superman theme for this. I do feel quite invincible though. taken in Vadehra Art Gallery by @not_thiscurator

This is a deeply personal essay that I thought I would never publish. Ever. But I got triggered yesterday.

Saw @bernardomosqueira post a story from an elevator at the @newmuseum and couldn’t hold myself back.

My love to those who read it, and to those who made it possible for me to be alive today to write it. by @not_thiscurator

Starting today I have joined the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, India, as an Assistant Curator of Visual Art.

KNMA’s projects and programs have been inspirational and impactful to say the least, not just in my life but throughout India and beyond. I deeply believe in the museum and Chairperson Kiran Nadar’s vision and call to action, bringing art to the public. Engaging them, involving them.

I have always held to my heart this quote from artist Satish Gujral, that art is a language that should be spoken in public spaces. In the years to come I will be proud to say that I stood with those who made this their mission in our country and elsewhere. Right now I am excited for the work at hand, and eager to get going.

I’m all in.

Thank you Deepanjana Klein, Roobina Karode, Akansha Rastogi, Avijna Bhattacharya, Premjish Achari for trusting me.

Thanks to Jayeeta Bagchi, my mother. Amitava Malakar, my father. Barnita Bagchi, Nandini Lahiri, Amitava Ganguly, David X Levine, Budhaditya and Prokriti, Arvind and Mona.

At Kala Bhavana, thank you R Sivakumar for believing in me. Arpan Mukherjee, Santhosh Sakinala, Sanchayan Ghosh.

Thanks also to SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice under Steven Henry Madoff and Isin Onol. Nicolas Garrera-Tolbert, Sara Reisman, Brian Kuan Wood, Christina Yang, Daniel Kunitz, Carolina Rito, Ruth Estevez. Special thanks to Jovanna Venegas.

To SAVVY Contemporary—everyone who has ever been a part of it and helped keep that space alive.

To SVA Galleries Zoe Evans, Evan Peltzman, Michael Dondero, Fana Feng, Tyson and Annabelle and the ENTIRE team.

To IMPULSE Magazine. Xuezhu Jenny Wang, Jubilee Park, Viktoria Reshetnikov, Meinzer.

Saw this show, and I loved it.

Not about to scream and shout—but I could spend hours there, preferably with a bottle of whiskey. Would’ve loved it more if @vadehraartgallery had a few benches for me to spend time on—these are paintings that demand some time. The thin layers of paint, and that uniquely Dodiya color palette—worked so well with the quiet, contemplative, and melancholic series.

A world of simulated dementia, juxtaposing timelines, realities, feelings, objects, and memories, but mostly playing with joy rather than devastation.

Sent my sentimental self into overdrive. Felt like someone was trying to remember reading another person’s private journals and recreating them through collages. All in.

Atul Dodiya, The Gatecrasher, D-53 Defense Colony, New Delhi. 3rd February—10th March.

In May 2024, I walked into the British Pavilion showing John Akomfrah at the Venice Biennale and walked up to this one guy sitting at a chair in the lower floor, “Do you know Harmeet Rahal?”

That guy was in fact Harmeet Rahal @harmeetrahal

After a pretty messy first night in Venice, I was then glad to be in the company of Rahal and Tonye Ekine @wherestonye at a catholic communist bar that evening.

We had sparkling wine beside one of the canals and talked about our hopes and dreams in the arts. Far away from our homes, in the heart of one of the most prominent historical cities of art during the art world’s biggest celebration, it felt to me like I had won already. Good people always do make me feel like that.

Almost two years later I am glad to be able to do this profile on him—and to see that we are all walking steadily towards our destinations. I am sure parallel lines (and lives) don’t just meet, they meet again, and again.

Thank you @impulse_magazine_ and @jubes_bb as always for this platform. Read the studio profile at link in bio. Artist harmeet rahal sitting in front of his artwork with a yellow website border and his name on top taken in London, United Kingdom by @not_thiscurator

After a fantastic Mumbai Gallery Weekend @mumbaigalleryassoc I revisited the Mithu Sen @mithusen26 show at Chemould Prescott Road @chemouldprescottroad one last time before returning.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a zine of monologues from Akansha Rastogi @addressing_the_year_3000 and the artist. Always so nice to have something to take home as a memory—and to have it work simultaneously as a mode of alternative viewing of the show itself, what a treat!

I needed more time with the works. So detailed, so well balanced—even with the images leading into chaotic Bosch-esque fever dreams. I always love a path forward into crazy narratives. I had always heard so much about her works (especially being from Santiniketan) and seen a couple in New York, but to get to see a full show has been really fulfilling.

If you’re in Mumbai please don’t miss it.

Went to see @ahongooptu ‘s Item! at @theurbantheatreproject in Kolkata about a week ago and loved it. The energy, the passion, the care—all of it. Went back a bit to my first drag experience and came back to this again. Read all about it now on my substack.

Looking back at last year’s Venice Biennale posed a lot of problems and some questions needed to be asked.

I had deep feelings about the show last year, and they have evolved considerably since then—especially given the state of the world we a are witness to today.

But above all, thank you to @adrianopedrosa for truly changing my life. Beyond what can be said about the 60th Venice Biennale, it will remain a fact that it was one of my first experiences of a major art show, and I am glad that such an event still exists on the global stage.

Thank you @thecuratorial_ for publishing this retrospective review. And thank you @steven_henry_madoff for your patience as an editor.
