The Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, and Northwestern University Press, are pleased to announce that the 2027 Humanities in Translation (HiT) Prize is now open for submissions.

The HiT Prize is awarded annually to a previously unpublished translation that expands literary canons. The winner will receive a total cash prize of $5,000 as well as publication by Northwestern University Press.

For this year’s competition, we are especially interested in works across all genres, both literary and scholarly, that display evocative, imaginative, and insightful approaches to the theme of “artifice,” broadly construed. While the theme may immediately signal a nod towards a contemporary focus on artificial intelligence, we understand “artifice” to be a timeless preoccupation of literary expression and scholarship, extending also to considerations of political ideology, social performance, aesthetics, and even literary and humanistic meditations on human relationships with nature and the natural world.

The deadline for entry is January 15, 2027.

For full submission guidelines, head to the link in the comments. by @nupress

Nobel day always makes us nostalgic. As we watch readers celebrate Anne Carson, we also remember and recognize Grazia Deledda, who, a century ago in 1926, won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Deledda was the second woman ever to do so.

Northwestern University Press is home to two translations of Deledda's work: ELIAS PORTOLU, translated by Martha King, and AFTER THE DIVORCE, translated by Susan Ashe.

In ELIAS PORTOLU, the titular character returns home to Nuoro in rural Sardinia after serving time in mainland Italy for minor theft. Lonely and vulnerable, he falls in love with his brother's fiancée. As his passion and guilt wind into a spiral of anguish and paralyzing indecision, Elias seeks guidance from two very different sources: the local priest and the pagan "father of the woods".

AFTER THE DIVORCE begins with an innocent man's, Costantino Ledda's, conviction of murder. After his imprisonment, his wife, Giovanna, has no way to provide for her family. In desperation, she divorces Costantino and marries a wealthy landowner. But when the true murderer is revealed, Costantino finds himself a free man again. Though it is forbidden, Costantino and Giovanna cannot stay away from each other and go down a dangerous, destructive path. by @nupress

Can liberation be found in the unexpected corners of a Renaissance faire?

In a near-future United States, the government has just stripped away the protections of birthright citizenship, and eighteen-year-old Raven is facing deportation. Her best hope: finding her long-gone father, an off-the-grid Renaissance faire entrepreneur called Tom the Hunter. If Raven can convince Tom to affirm his paternity, she will be able to remain in the only country she has ever known.

But Tom is no easy man locate, let alone tell what to do. The charismatic leader of an underground resistance movement based at a Ren faire in Bristol, Wisconsin, he has spent his life agitating against the ever-increasing reach of corporate and government surveillance while avoiding its gaze. In a society overrun by drones, self-driving cars, and wearable devices that track mood and behavior, he sends messages by pigeon and trains hawks to attack invaders. The only thing from the “regular world” allowed to enter his self-contained realm has been Gwen, his new lover. Facing economic and emotional headwinds after losing her job, Gwen has fled her family and a home dangerously in need of remediation, and she dives headfirst into an affair with the passionate yet conniving Tom. But when Tom’s machinations threaten those around him, Gwen begins to question her choice to leave her children behind for a world that may not be as empowering as it seems.

As Raven and Gwen become enmeshed in the vibrant and insurgent community of Bristol’s Ren faire and Tom’s antics reach unsettling new heights, each must make a choice on where they stand—and with whom. by @nupress

What an amazing week!
Two books published in the same week!!

The Flowers Along the Way and This City/Esta Ciudad are now IN THE WORLD. Here I am on Tuesday at @Hedgebrook's library surrounded by the gifts of brilliant
and storied women writers adding my own contributions.
I returned home to find a lovely celebratory bouquet from @sla_agency
Then on Thursday @floatingbridgepress organized a fantastic reading @thepoet to welcome This City / Esta Ciudad which included the amazing and ridiculously talented S. Salazar, Ricardo Ruiz, and Vincent Rendoni. All of four of us Latinx authors hitting it out of the ballpark! It was 100% out of 100% kind of evening. In the pics: Michael Schmetlzer, Floating Bridge's Editor-in-Chief, getting the evening going, the poets lineup, and with Ricardo Ruiz and Barbara Rodriguez, Director of Seattle Escribe. 💯🔥💯🎉

Join us for a reading and conversation with Micheal O'Siadhail, the world's leading Irish poet. For over 50 years, his lyrical mediations have captured relationships between humanity and nature, despair and faith, and courage and healing. He will read from his newest book THE ESSENTIAL POEMS, which brings together selected works from throughout his career. Poet and Director of Northwestern University Press Parneshia Jones will lead a conversation following the reading.

October 7, 2026
5:00pm-6:30pm
Free and open to the public

The Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston, IL

---

“Just as the world wearies and worries us with its pervasive God awfulness, along comes the rebirth of faith in humanity that is Micheal O'Siadhail’s utterly, utterly wonderful collection, THE ESSENTIAL POEMS. My heavy heart lifts, and to quote the poet himself, ‘explodes in an endless thank-you’, for here is proof of an indomitable essence that will not submit to the inevitability of self-inflicted misery but will insist like Dante that we will see the stars again. O’Siadhail is the Dante of our day.”—Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, 1997-2011

“In one of the poems in this book, Micheal O'Siadhail speaks of a 'fathoming of wonder', and this phrase aptly describes his poetic imperative. These poems are intellectually curious; emotionally resonant; linguistically rich and beautifully formed. They explore the macrocosm and microcosm of human experience and repay multiple readings. This book is a very real treasure.”—Eugene O’Brien, Mary Immaculate College

“A deeply humane poet, Micheal O'Siadhail hits a new high in this wonderfully harmonious collection—a truly enjoyable and sensorial experience for all of us to share in these troubled times." —Jerry White, humanitarian activist, author, and diplomat by @nupress
