Claudia Castro Luna with Anna Lapera: The Flowers Along The Way Friday october 16 at 6pm Join us at Bird in Hand to hear about Claudia Castro Luna’s The Flowers Along The Way (Northwestern University Press, September 15, 2026), a first-of-its-kind memoir in English about girlhood during the Salvadoran Civil War. In The Flowers Along the Way, Castro Luna is a girl trying on a pair of high-heeled sandals hoping some of her neighbor’s glamour will rub off on her, while living with the understanding that an army convoy, a military jeep, or la Policia Nacional, might kill her. My preface is about how (I’m gay and therefore) high school theatre changed my life—and how Christopher Durang’s brilliant plays made me want to write my own, and how I’ve dreamt of eventually keeping LAMP BACK next to my teenage bible: his 27 SHORT PLAYS. Today I finally get to do that. Thank you to @katej1968 for coming to me with this idea and for all your time, work, support, editing, and comprehensive introduction, @meganstielstra for welcoming us with open arms at Northwestern and seeing my theatre as a book, our fearless editor Anne Gendler and the team at NUP, copyeditor Wendy Weckwerth, @gia.goodrich for capturing the clown in the field and getting her to the beautiful cover, and so many more.
