Have only bumped into few short clips from the 90s & early 00s Helsinki nights but here’s a lil’ trip down the memory lane !!

Footage from the first @subb1996 nights at Nylon (1996), BigSound’s Helsinki Connection at @tavastiaklubi (1997), Freeform at Kerma, and Koneisto festival (around 2000).

Artists from the new ’Vintage EP’ all feature, together with some other familiar faces of the early Helsinki scene: Breakwater Crew (@dharmaon3 / Dice aka @teslarok / Dj Bluez) @djmuffler / @odjdizzy / Alimo aka @beatsandstyles / Pinball aka @fliprrrr

VINTAGE EP with the first three releases on Straight Up Breakbeat (2000-01) is out now as a Bandcamp Exclusive EP. All tracks remastered with ❤️ by @fanufatgyver

Tracks on the video:
Dharma - Dopenology [SUBB 001]
Dice - Spy [SUBB 001]
Muffler - It’s The Way [SUBB 003]
Muffler - Drop [SUBB 003]

Big up @anna104 for the Freeform footage 😍

How do you celebrate 25 years of a label that spent 20 in hibernation?

Since the late 90s, Straight Up Breakbeat has stood for pure underground energy — jungle drum & bass driven by a love for the breaks. After a long hiatus, we roared back to life half a decade ago, and now, 25 years since the label’s birth, and five since the rebirth, we celebrate with ’States Of Art’ — a deep dive into the global network of artists pushing the sound forward.

Originally released across three vinyl EPs, the new compilation album unites artists shaping the next wave of jungle and drum & bass worldwide. The expanded “25” Bandcamp edition adds key tracks from the label’s rebirth era, making it an essential best-of with, you guessed it, 25 tracks in total.

20 limited vinyl bundles are out Dec 5th on Bandcamp, with test pressings carrying numbers hand-painted by EGS, whose aesthetic defines the series visual identity.

Complete Bundle (10 pcs)
* All three ’States Of Art’ vinyl EPs
* Unique test pressing in sleeve hand-painted by EGS
* Bandcamp exclusive 25 track digital compilation

Out Of Fuel finally get their vinyl debut on the label with a VIP of ’Tulenisku’, as heard recently in the sets of Sully and Dj Flight among others. The original from their 2023 album ’Geometric Landscapes’ is flipped with added breaks & percussion, a spine-tingling breakdown and extra growl in the bassline. Available on ’States of Art III’ vinyl EP and as a digital single. by @odjdizzy

The kids r alright! Bumped into this kid, maybe 10, at the small but perfectly rounded @goosebumbsrecords today. He had just got a pair of VINYL decks for birthday and was looking for some 91-92 hardcore with nice rave pianos 😍. Happily gifted him the Zion Gates repress, even if the Tim Reaper remix is not 100% what was briefed. He was happy, I was happy, and I think the shop made a sale as well 😇. All you others, you’ll have to buy the vinyl, either at @subb1996 Bandcamp or all good record shops.

Smash Hits was a mid-90s club concept by @odjpirkka and myself, with zero musical limitations whatsoever.

Both of us fully immersed in the jungle dnb world, guess we just wanted a place where we could play music that we loved, louder than was possible at home.

Residing at a self-proclaimed ”straight-friendly gay bar”, with flyer images nicked from an old Hamleys toy catalogue put to good use by @anttomelasniemi the club tried to open up minds during an era when 99% of nights had a strict genre focus.

Swipe for samples ▶️ A departure from the label’s usual musical direction our new EP ’Solar Encounters’ (out Fri 20 June) hits the deeper side, from classic atmospherics to the more experimental, jazzier tracks with Mineral, Marvel Cinema, IJO and Hmr all contributing.

”I’ve never been a ’taking listeners on a journey’ type of Dj (sounds a bit Swiss Toni to me)” but the mix sees @odjdizzy with the traditional way of presenting the atmospheric styles. The longest blend clocks in at over 3 minutes 😇

The mixtape is out now, with EP tracks and additions from the label’s catalogue by Askel, Esc, Out Of Fuel, Park Shadow and DJ Sofa. Stream on SoundCloud & YouTube or download for free on Bandcamp.

On the visuals, the brief for @lonek was to imagine what the legendary compilations such as Promised Land and Logical Progression would look like if created with modern day tools.

Tracks:
2 @ijosound - Parallel Lifetimes
3 Mineral @ilkkakurkela - Only Silence
4 @marvel_cinemadnb - Complex Fields
5 @hmr.music - Futurology
6 @out_of_fuel x Esc & Mineral - Complex Channel X The Red Death
7 @escjuha feat Modist - Alright x Belong II

I remember studying the @allcrewsbook back in the day, and also got the repress 😇. A great story of jungle’s earliest years has extended into an online version with international crews, and they just added a bunch of @subb1996 gang 🙌🏼 including @fanufatgyver @escjuha @ilkkakurkela @ijosound & Msymiakos.
