return, remembrance, re-being

I have this vivid memory from third grade, kneeling against an oak tree to watch hundreds of ladybirds emerge from its trunk. I built tents for them with sticks and used dandelions for seats… there were leaf bugs, katydids, honeybees all around.

I live in torrance, one of the most industrial cities in LA — once abundant with wetlands, rolling hills, and toads the size of your fist. my dad would always tell me about his childhood days here, chasing jack rabbits and walking through fields thick of sphinx moths to get to elementary school. before the oil refineries and concrete roads were constructed, and designing strip malls became a habitual routine.

today: few grasshoppers, no swallowtails. seldom the bumble bee, once a local resident.

and yet, nature remains. within the hillsides of protected landscapes, corners of neighboring streets, pocket gardens, and creeks. but we can do better to provide for the native life that once thrived.

energy recycles like the seasons, and though I can no longer find bundles of ladybirds in nearby spaces, we can visualize that future. we can feel it below our feet, in what has come before. there is remembrance in the land, just quietly waiting for a return to memory, a re-being.

earth remembers. so it is possible we may remember, too.

“To feel weightless on the body and on the earth…”

I had the absolute honor of adorning an upcycled garment by @chonabacaoco as part of her collection “Weightless”, showcased prior to @collidescopefoundation x @chilli.app New York Fashion Week event, The Green Edit.

This collection is crafted from discarded fabrics from the pandemic, all collected from Milan, Italy, where Chona is based. They were blended with ethically-sourced hablon — a mixture of banana and pineapple fiber — from her hometown, Iloilo, in the Philippines.

Designed to lift the weight off your shoulders, “Weightless” promotes the importance of mindful consumption and invites wearers to embrace the lightness of being, reminding us that mental health, too, is about creating a space for letting go of what no longer serves us.

It was such a joy to discuss sustainability in the fashion industry & to collaborate with a designer who is so deeply passionate about intentional wear and production!
