There’s something truly magical about the changing of the seasons, especially in Louisiana. Growing up, I always cherished when fall finally arrived. The humidity eased just a touch, and my heart would race with excitement at the thought of visiting my Mawmaw and Pawpaw’s house. Every time we stepped through their door, Pawpaw would smile and say, “Willene, I think it’s time for some of those buttermilk biscuits of yours!” My brothers and I would light up, barely able to contain our excitement.

Mawmaw’s biscuits were nothing short of legendary. She kept her flour in this old, timeworn bowl, worn smooth from years of use, and poured the buttermilk in like she was crafting a spell. It wasn’t just about measurements; it was all in the feel of the dough, something instinctual. She’d press in Crisco with her fingers, working the dough with a grace that only comes from years of love-filled practice. Before long, those perfect, plump little biscuits would be nestled on a pan, ready for the oven.

Her oven—oh, that oven—wasn't much to look at. It was old, beaten, and certainly not what anyone would call state-of-the-art. But to Mawmaw, it was sacred. She knew its quirks like she knew us, treating it with the same tenderness and care. She understood the precise temperature needed, the exact position on the rack where those biscuits would rise to golden perfection. When they came out, we never waited. We devoured them hot, smothered in butter or paired with a rich, homemade tomato gravy if we were lucky.

Those memories flood me with warmth and nostalgia. It’s why, here at Oma Leen’s, we proudly offer a buttermilk biscuit, in honor of that fierce, sassy woman who taught me what it means to cook with love. We use butter instead of Crisco and laminate the dough with a touch more refinement, but her essence is there. That care, that thoughtfulness, that love—it’s alive in every bite. by @omaleens

Ya know those moments in life when you realize someone made a much bigger impact on you than they probably ever knew?

Tonight was one of those. 🥹

I was down a cook. On a Saturday night. On the line with only two cooks. We were…COOKED. 😅

And then one of my servers comes up to me and says there’s a couple at her table who knows me. They’re about to leave.

I’m exhausted, but curious. WHO?!

She says, “I think their names are London? And Stetson?”

And I immediately get emotional.

Y’ALL. 😭

London was the very first “customer” I ever had order food from me. She believed in me before I even believed in myself. And my food was MID. 🥲

I was 19 years old, bartering food for hair appointments. She was my GIRL!!

And Stetson? I actually worked for him at Hibbett Sports.

HIBBETT SPORTS. 😂

But that man taught me so much about being a good leader. He would have these awesome team meetings and go out of his way to make every single one of us feel like we were part of something bigger.

It was the first time I remember feeling like I belonged to a team that really mattered.

And tonight, 13 years later, they walked into my restaurant.

MY restaurant. 🥹

I don’t know why, but seeing them almost brought me to tears.

Maybe because I was exhausted. Maybe because life has a funny way of bringing things full circle.

Or maybe because I realized that two people who probably had no idea how much they impacted my life were standing in the middle of something they helped me build, in their own little ways.

And the best part? I got to tell them just how much they meant to me all those years ago.

It’s funny how people can make such a huge impact on your life without ever realizing it.

I wonder how many people I’ve crossed paths with who have shaped the person I’ve become.

And I wonder if I’ve ever been that person for someone else.

Anyway, I was just trying to survive a Saturday night dinner service and ended up crying over two people I met 13 years ago. 😂😭

Ok our little Devils. Our next pop up is with what I consider one of the best. ( if not the best ,fight me🤷🏻) restaurant in Texas. @omaleens puts out a superior product in a rural spot in our great state. I feel it would be a Michelin rated restaurant-in any big city. We are fortunate enough to be cooking up a 1990’s nostalgia dinner with 90’s hip hop beats with @soy_capaz . 5 courses paired with delicious @shinerspirits in the cocktails. Honestly… @fbg_castiron has finessed all the things about a cast iron. They are, quite frankly, the luxury STANDARD when it comes to cast iron. After walking through the factory with the owners(Heather and Jay) we determined that they also understand taking something simple, and making it 100x better than it ever could be. Thank you Heather and Jay, for being so accommodating and welcoming us with such open arms. You are pursuing, the American dream. Get it. by @omaleens
