POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I fixed 3 of our monitors at work with hot glue lol 🤣

Long story short, the tweeters sounded way louder than they should have compared to the woofers. Treble hell.

From the little I know about passive crossovers, I knew that the crossovers were probably attenuating the signal going to the tweeters with resistors. I figured if the tweeters sounded too loud, the resistors must have failed.

I opened up the crossovers and the resistors were so loose on the pcb you could jiggle them. In one of them, the lead had snapped. I desoldered and tested the one with the big chunk taken out of it, and shockingly it read exactly as many ohms as it was rated for. That's when I learned these resistors were made of cement and wrapped wire. I figured that meant the rest were probably ok too and were just loose. I didn't want to risk removing the other resistors to test since the leads were brittle enough that two had snapped and we didn't have any spare parts.

I noticed the only crossovers still in decent shape were the 2 that the manufacturer had put glue in between.

So I resoldered them all and put hot glue in between them to keep them from vibrating as much. I took spares for the two that had snapped from two wedges we were already scrapping for a different reason. And it seems to have worked!

We only had time to put the first one back together on Friday but it sounded night and day better!!

Fortunately we didn't blow any tweeters while the resistors were out of whack!

Acclimating to office life...

Short on time? Test two adapters and a cable all at once 🤣

I don't usually test adapters when we buy them but I've had a lot of frustrating phone conversations with multinational audio/lighting corporations this week and my trust in them is low lol.

(This is not a dig at neutrik, I did not have any frustrating convos with them)

Happy 14th bday @shakedownbham !! 💖💖💖

Had lots of fun last night with @hillstomp (peep the bucket snare EQ) @devin_champlin_ who always makes good use of the fog machine, and @smokeybrights with some of the best keyboard tone I've ever heard!

The most dark academia NL4 wall plate you will ever see 📚🏰🔮

Just know that somewhere out there, an NL4 is reading Virginia Woolf and realizing that it's queer. 🤣

New job is going good, we're running sound for the state supreme court next week? Life is strange.

Don't forget to take time for self care and to call your local Congress people!

As the world continues to go to shit it's important to remember to find joy in the little places you can!

Let's all keep fighting together and supporting each other but also don't forget to laugh when you can and spend time relaxing and with friends, otherwise you'll burn out before you can keep fighting.

You can always repair a mic stand with a rubber duck if you need a chuckle!

I'm incredibly proud of myself for making it two and a half years completely freelance taking only audio work with no day job. However, some big changes are afoot.

I've accepted a job at WWU as their event technical coordinator (overseeing tech crew and the tech aspects of events on campus) and as a result I'm going to pull back to only mixing two or three shows a month.

I absolutely love live sound and have been incredibly happy and grateful to get to do what I love each day, but it is a very financially risky career path and takes a lot of work to string together enough work from enough places to actually make a living. I'm proud that I have managed that these last years, but am excited for a little more stability.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found a day job that is so up my alley and really meshes with my long term goal of mentoring new engineers and provided access opportunities into the industry for those who have been traditionally left out of it. I fully recognize that attending college is a privilege and will be doing my best to make sure that new engineers outside of the college are also receiving mentorship and opportunities so that we can level the playing field in audio.

You'll still see me around town mixing shows, just less of them.

So thankful for all the bands, venues, and people who have supported me this far on my audio journey!

Y'all @_kriztin added FLAMES to the @shakedownbham lighting scene 🔥🤣🔥

Had a lot of fun taking our updated lighting rig for a spin at the @sonsofrainier and @lonesomeshack show.

Sons of Ranier are always such a treat! Echoplex, three part vocal harmonies, tasteful harmonizing guitar solos, everything you could want to hear! Lonesome shack killed it too!

Like our new "office" decorations?

Had so so so much fun tonight with @whoresband @stainlesspdx and @tacos_the_band for @structuresbrewing 's anniversary!

I used a kick in mic (rare for me in this room although I have to say I think I will be doing it more on heavier nights, that extra spanky attack was pretty handy tonight with all the stage volume)

Was really blown away by the talent on stage tonight, an absolute shredder of a show with a proper pit 💖💖💖

So much fun tonight with @hownowkarlblau @st.yuma and Bird Harlow! Everyone was so sweet and so talented and I heard so many funny jokes and stories tonight.

It's been really fun running some softer shows at the Shakedown lately and getting to work with a wider variety of drum sounds. It makes it easier for me to stay away from forming habits and trust my ears instead.

I built a mic and it sounds great! Woohoo! (I did not design so don't go thinking I'm a wizard now).

Finally set some time aside to put together my S-25 kit from @micparts ! What a great sounding mic and a pretty easy kit to follow. Would highly recommend to anyone into that sort of thing!

Learned a lot of things you'd thing I'd know by now like *gasp* placing components in a way where you can still read what they are once they're soldered in and cleaning the PCB 🤯

Really happy with how this sounds and happy that it worked perfectly on the first try! I'll try and put some audio samples up for y'all when I have some more time.
