a moment i’ve been chasing for over 12 months now and today the ocean decided to make up for the wait! i finally got my manta swim 😭

not one, not two but we counted eight mantas surrounding the boat! all gathered for a coral spawn feeding event, giving me swim after swim after swim, each one somehow better than the last

10 swims in (i think), completely overwhelmed and thinking the day couldn’t possibly get any better until we spotted one more, the biggest and darkest manta of the day…

of course i had to jump back in and as i ducked underneath her, i realised i wasn’t looking at just any manta but a melanistic one 🖤 a rare genetic variation that gives them that incredible all black colouring and something that has been sitting on my ocean bingo card foreverrrrr

a lifelong dream that seriously couldn’t have played out any better (and the countless jelly stings were well worth it 🪼)!

our new travel buddy 🤎

we’re usually such perfectionists but film makes us chill out a bit… no retakes, no fixing it, just snap it and keep goin!

that’s what we love about it - slower, a bit rough around the edges but wayyyy more real. the kind of stuff we’ll show the kids one day

a little flip on reality 🤎
the first photo is now and the second, what we know and love.

town beach has always been the heart of this place - warm evenings, salty air, people scattered across the grass, strangers turning into friends. a space that felt so alive but right now, it looks a little different.

social media has been feeling pretty heavy these past few days. so much loss, damage and heartbreak being shared and while that’s all very real, we also wanted to share a little light. this post was originally the other way around, a typical before and after. we feel like that only further highlighted the negative so we flipped it, focussing on something more hopeful. what this place HAS BEEN and what it WILL BE again.

if the last few days have shown us anything, it’s that this community is something really special. the way everyone has shown up, checked in, lent a hand and looked out for one another, it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

we’ll be back here again - watching sunsets, sharing food, laughing with friends and it’ll feel even more special when we are! better days are coming ✨

cyclone narelle has left exy feeling heartbreakingly quiet ❤️‍🩹

yesterday we drove the beaches, hoping to help in any small way we could but nothing prepares you for the devastation. so many lives lost - octopuses scattered along the shoreline, fish, crustaceans, shells still holding sea life and debris everywhere from broken trees to tangled seaweed. for anything that looked like it still had a chance, we did our best to gently return it to the ocean.

wildlife services here are completely overrun right now and it really shows just how much help is needed after an event like this. even the smallest actions can make a difference and that’s all we were trying to do.

one of the more incredible moments was helping a venomous sea snake back to the water. it was very alert, which gave us confidence he wouldn’t drown so using a long stick we carefully guided him back in. watching it swim off strongly was such a powerful and special moment - wishing our slithery friend the best of luck out there! 🐍

but not every story had a happy ending…
we found a little tern (a seabird we later learned) and named her narelle, “nari” for short. she was extremely disoriented but had no visible injuries. we kept her quiet and comfortable in the car for hours then brought her home and placed her gently in a laundry basket with a soft towel and a small lid of water. we truly thought she might pull through but a few hours later, she passed.

it was incredibly distressing but we take comfort in knowing she wasn’t alone. she was safe, warm and cared for in her final moments, not left out there in the heat and chaos.

a heavy reminder of how powerful nature can be. our hearts are with all of the wildlife and our community doing it tough right now 🌀🕊️

there’s been damage to homes, to businesses and to the places we love most but this little town is strong.

we’ve lived here less than a year and this is already our second cyclone, this one far greater than the last. even so, it’s shown us how special this community is. we know everyone will come together, support one another and rebuild 🌀🤎

a very long, loud and heartbreaking night here in exy as cyclone narelle continues to move through but we are okay 🌀

our hearts are with everyone in town - your safety, your families and your homes will always come first. please stay safe and don’t take any risks ❤️‍🩹

but as the winds ease and when it is safe to step outside, a gentle reminder to also look out for the voiceless…our beautiful wildlife. so many birds and animals are out there fighting battles of their own right now - injured, displaced and terrified.
