Indian Birds

Brahminy Kite is having long relationship with the Indian culture. It is also known as red-backed sea-eagle and it is a medium sized raptor or bird of prey. In my childhood, this bird is my favourite and may be my first bird identification. It was believed that the sighting of the same brings good fortune as it is considered to be the vehicle of Lord Vishnu as per the Hindu mythology. They find their place in varieties of holy scriptures and in other components of culture. They are commonly found near waterbodies and eat dead fish and other prey. The word brahminy talks about the superior quality among all other kite species. Even though there are 4 subspecies, only one subspecies present in India.
