Last night was technically our last* Cahoots workshop for 2021!! We were so happy to see everyone in person on Ngunnawal country, after running workshops online since August. We couldn’t be more proud of this group of artists who have been super dedicated to developing their practice and being a critical creative community for each other. This year was certainly a challenging time to run the Cahoots program, maybe even more so than last year. But we stuck with it, and we can’t wait to see what these beautiful people do next. (Spoiler: next year we will DEFINITELY have some public showings of new work-in-progress made by this Cahoots cohort) *next week will be the ACTUAL last workshop, where all the artists will do a little show n tell of the process they have been working on. We’ll capture and share a little of that session for anyone following along at home. 📸 Julia Boyd ID: a group of people stand and kneel in a room in fron of two windows, socially distanced from each other. They are all smiling, but you can’t tell because they are wearing masks. #experimentalart #creativecommuinty #practicedevelopment #cahoot21 #yah21 #cbrarts

Loma Linda University runs one of the few programs in the country built entirely around preventing Alzheimer’s rather than managing it, and Dean and Ayesha Sherzai run it. Their framing starts with the timeline. Amyloid and tau accumulate for roughly two decades before anyone notices a symptom, and because the brain carries no pain receptors, none of it registers while it happens. The first forgotten name sits at the end of a long process, not the start of one. That gap is the entire opportunity, and the numbers attached to it are better than most people expect. Dhana and colleagues (Neurology, 2020) found that people following four or five healthy lifestyle factors had a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s dementia than those following zero or one. The Sherzais’ NEURO framework is built on that pattern. Diet carries its own figure. Morris and colleagues (Neurology, 2018) tracked older adults and found that roughly one daily serving of leafy greens corresponded to cognitive aging equivalent to being 11 years younger, though the design makes it an association rather than proof. Exercise and sleep each have a mechanism behind them. Brisk walking raises BDNF, a growth factor supporting the formation of new neural connections. Deep sleep drives the glymphatic system, which clears the same proteins implicated in the disease. Worth keeping the honest caveat attached: most of this is observational, so these habits track with lower risk rather than demonstrably causing it, and genetics and healthcare access still shape outcomes. Nothing here buys a guarantee. It moves the odds, starting decades before the odds appear to matter. We send a free weekly email covering the latest science on longevity, health, and performance.
