This ode to romance went live in @theageaustralia and @sydneymorningherald this week 🩷 Had to include one of the many “must be nice to be millionaires” comments we got because LOL (we both still work other jobs 😂). Anyway, go romance, go love, go this amazing bookish community!! We love you! 🥰

This makes me so emotional. As a romance reader I often feel inferior or like I have to justify my reading choices. This genre is not only keeping bookstores alive but it’s fueling and filling brand new ones everyday.

So interesting that books by women are labelled this way - “trash” - but popular books by male authors wouldn’t get this label. I know an older guy who really only reads legal, procedural crime type fiction. There’s no name for that genre which has an immoral type slur, suggesting that he’s wasting his reading time on junk.

This 🙌 I love seeing people stick up for this genre. Why do people think love stories aren’t real literature yet murder stories are????? Talk about having wrong priorities 😂

I discovered romance novels as a teen working at a restaurant with a bunch of under employed older women. They’d bring in bags of their read books and I had nothing but time that summer between my 10 hour shifts in a boiling kitchen (for $25/day) and laying out tanning with my sisters! I devoured those historicals and Harlequins! Those HEAs were like a balm to my young soul - as I lived in a world where men left women with children and beat them and abused them. I saw women working so hard to support themselves and their kids (not all, but a lot). Give me a millionaire, a protective Viking or pirate, smart women who knew what they wanted and challenges norms and these men. Honestly, it was an education for me. Decades later, I’m still a romance reader. I’ve read lots of other stuff that scared me and thrilled me and broke my heart - and I’ve decided that the world is crazy enough and I want my books to end happily. Thank God for women writing books for women - for writers of romance. 💝 I appreciate you very much and I don’t call it trash or smut. Everyone else can mind their own business about what they/we read.

Well said 👏. And in the case of Twilight, where people say it's not well written... I wouldn't know if it is or not as I dont analyze books that way. I read them and get fully immersed. I loved it. Took me back to every feeling of teenage angst I ever had. I know people analyze literature for a job or a hobby but I think thats a shame as they can never just read a book for pleasure.

I don't read romance unless it's wrapped up like a fantasy and it's definitely not my fave genre but I can still agree with all of this. I hate that it's basically hated only because lots of women love it 🤷🏼‍♀️
