There’s an old saying: “It takes a village to raise a child.” But here’s what we often forget—that village needs to take care of the mother first.

The postpartum period is sometimes called the fourth trimester, and for good reason. Your body just performed a miracle. You’re healing, adjusting to massive hormonal shifts, learning to breastfeed, and running on fragments of sleep. And yet, our culture expects you to bounce back, handle it all, and make it look easy. That’s not just unrealistic, it’s harmful.

Here’s the truth: A mother who is depleted, exhausted, and running on empty cannot fully show up for her baby. Not because she doesn’t love her child fiercely, but because she’s human. You need rest to heal. You need nourishment to produce milk. You need emotional support to navigate the overwhelming waves of new motherhood. When someone takes care of mom, whether that’s a partner, family member, postpartum doula, or friend, they’re not just helping you. They’re helping your baby thrive.

What “Taking Care of Mom” Actually Looks Like

Taking care of a postpartum mother doesn’t mean asking what you can do. It means doing:
✨Bringing nourishing meals without being asked
✨Doing the dishes, laundry, and tidying up
✨Holding the baby so mom can shower, nap, or simply sit in silence
✨Protecting her rest and setting boundaries with visitors
✨Listening without judgment when she needs to talk
✨Reminding her she’s doing an amazing job on the hard days

It’s not about grand gestures. It’s about the quiet, consistent acts that say: “I see you. You matter. Rest.”

Who’s taking care of you, mama? And if the answer is “no one,” let this be your permission to change that.

A Message to the Village If you know a new mother, don’t wait to be asked. Show up. Bring food. Take out the trash. Watch the baby so she can sleep. Text her: “I’m going to the store. What can I grab for you?” The weeks and months after birth are when mothers need support the most, yet it’s often when they feel the most alone. Be the person who changes that. Because when we take care of mothers, we take care of families. And when we take care of families, we create a healthier, more compassionate world.

A Message to New Moms If you’re reading this in the postpartum fog, hear this: Asking for help is not weakness. Accepting support is not failure. Letting someone make you a meal, hold your baby, or run an errand isn’t taking advantage, it’s wisdom. You are not meant to do this alone. Your only job right now is to heal and bond with your baby. Everything else? That’s what your village is for.
