The Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield has required patrons to wear a tight-fitting KN-95 mask since it opened last year.⁠ ⁠ But on August 31st, management made an announcement that would tear apart the queer community in Greenfield and beyond. In an Instagram post, Last Ditch said that Saturday nights would become mask-optional. ⁠ ⁠ The backlash was immediate and overwhelming. Hundreds of detractors flooded the post with comments accusing the bar of being racist, ableist — even eugenicist. ⁠ ⁠ Jackie Matellian, the bar’s sole remaining founder, and other volunteers have tried to mend the damage.
