These are the progressions I’ll often take beginners through before progressing to a full barbell back squat.

There isn’t a magic weight or strength level you have to reach before you can use a barbell. It’s about building confidence, learning good technique and progressing at a pace that feels right for you.

💡A little tip: a barbell usually weighs 20kg, but some gyms also have 15kg bars. If you’re not sure which one you’re using, the weight is usually written on the end of the bar.

I hope this video gives your confidence to try your first barbell squat!

And if you have any questions about barbell squats drop them in the comments below or DM me :)

Great answer to the most common beginner question. The empty bar is a tool, not a graduation, most people are ready weeks before they feel ready.

I’ve been working out since I was 16 I’m 46 now and I still can’t squat deep. Every time I do I either get a slipped disc and then hernia surgery or a back of the knee tear and this is with just body weight. No one knows why. I just can’t squat deep

This is a smart approach that will help long term. It's weightlifting not a race, don't rush the progress

So I can squat with an emoty barbell but as soon as I put weights on I cant squat, I cant get low at all. Does this mean I need to work more on building up to the weights? I went straight in with 30kg…
