Lions drink water by lapping it up with their tongues, curving the tip backward to create a spoon-like shape. As they rapidly flick their tongue, the backward curvature draws the water into their mouth.

Mechanics of Drinking

Unlike humans, big cats cannot use suction to draw water into their mouths. Instead, they rely on a highly specialized lapping mechanism

The "Spoon" Curl: They curve the tip of their tongue backward to briefly touch the water's surface.

Rapid Retraction: As they quickly pull their tongue back into their mouth, the inertia of the water creates a liquid column. They snap their jaws shut just in time to catch the column of water before gravity pulls it back down.

Rough Texture: Their tongues are covered in backward-facing, tiny, rough barbs called papillae, which act like velcro to help pull and trap water more efficiently as they drink.
