A beleza do mundo não desapareceu de uma vez. Ela foi morrendo aos poucos, silenciosamente, enquanto trocávamos tudo o que encantava por aquilo que apenas funcionava. Os teatros perderam os detalhes dourados, os relógios viraram telas apagadas, as fontes deram lugar a estruturas frias, as bibliotecas ficaram mais práticas e menos vivas. Não foi apenas a arquitetura que mudou. Mudou também a maneira como passamos a enxergar os lugares e a própria vida. Houve uma época em que até o que era comum carregava cuidado. Uma varanda não existia apenas para cumprir sua função: tinha curvas, plantas, grades desenhadas e marcas de quem viveu ali. Uma entrada não era somente passagem, mas convite. As ruas tinham fontes, árvores, relógios e fachadas que faziam alguém parar por alguns segundos para olhar. Hoje, tudo precisa ser rápido, barato, reto, limpo, replicável e fácil de substituir. Construímos espaços onde nada parece ter sido feito para durar, talvez porque estejamos desaprendendo a permanecer. Chamamos de progresso tudo aquilo que economiza tempo, mas quase nunca perguntamos o que fazemos com o tempo economizado. Corremos por prédios sem identidade, atravessamos praças vazias olhando para o celular e passamos por paredes sem história. Aos poucos, o mundo também vai ficando assim por dentro: funcional, silencioso e indiferente. A beleza exige demora, detalhe, intenção e presença — exatamente tudo aquilo que a pressa nos convenceu de que era desnecessário. Talvez o mundo não tenha perdido sua beleza. Talvez nós apenas tenhamos começado a tratá-la como excesso. Retiramos os enfeites, apagamos as marcas do passado, substituímos o artesanal pelo descartável e chamamos o vazio de modernidade.
