Lionel Messi was left in tears after Argentina’s World Cup title defence ended with a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The 39-year-old captain was visibly emotional after the final whistle as fans around the stadium chanted his name and held up placards in tribute to the Argentine legend following another historic World Cup campaign.

Spain sealed their second FIFA World Cup title thanks to substitute Ferran Torres, who scored the winner early in the second half of extra time after reacting quickest to a rebound.

Argentina’s hopes had already suffered a major blow when Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second booking in stoppage time of normal time, forcing the defending champions to play extra time with 10 men. Lionel Scaloni’s side struggled throughout the contest and did not register a single shot, on or off target, until the 115th minute.

The victory also saw Spain coach Luis de la Fuente make history, becoming the oldest manager to win the FIFA World Cup at the age of 65.

Despite the defeat, Messi reached another milestone by becoming only the second player to appear in three FIFA World Cup finals. At 39, he also became the oldest outfield player to feature in a World Cup final. Spain, however, had the final say as they reclaimed football’s biggest prize after a hard-fought 120-minute contest.

The Centre and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) remained locked in a fresh standoff on Thursday after the government claimed it had sent four formal proposals within 24 hours, offering to meet protest representatives at any time to discuss their demands. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said the government had repeatedly approached CJP representatives since Wednesday afternoon and was ready to hold discussions at Union Health Minister JP Nadda’s office or residence. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the NEET UG 2026 results on Thursday, with more than 11.21 lakh candidates qualifying for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India.Nearly 20 lakh students appeared for the re-examination conducted on June 21 across 5,440 centres in 551 Indian cities and 14 international locations. The examination was offered in 13 languages.Aryan Gupta from Punjab and Panshul Bansal from Haryana emerged as the joint toppers after scoring 715 marks out of 720. According to the NTA, 19 candidates scored above 700 marks, while 138 students secured more than 690.A total of 1,492 candidates scored at least 650 marks, while 10,160 students crossed the 600-mark mark. More than 90,000 candidates obtained 500 marks or above.Female candidates made up over 58% of those who qualified and recorded a higher success rate than male candidates. The NTA also said that more than 93% of the top 138 performers were appearing for NEET for the first time.Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of successful candidates, with more than 1.7 lakh students qualifying. Lakshadweep had the lowest number, with 43 candidates clearing the examination.Category-wise, over 5.12 lakh OBC-NCL candidates qualified, followed by 2.91 lakh candidates from the General category. Around 1.59 lakh Scheduled Caste and 63,716 Scheduled Tribe candidates also cleared the test.The results were released after the NTA published the final answer key. During evaluation, the agency revised two Physics questions. One question was dropped, while two options were accepted as correct for another, resulting in eight additional marks being awarded under the evaluation rules.Qualified candidates can now participate in counselling for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other undergraduate medical programmes. The Medical Counselling Committee will conduct admissions for the 15% All India Quota, while state authorities will handle the remaining seats.Students have been advised to rely only on official websites for counselling updates and avoid fake admission offers or messages seeking money and personal information.
