We were in Vancouver for a wedding, so we booked an Airbnb on the Westside near W 33rd. In the morning, both dogs left the bedroom. Kaia greeted my mom while Ryuu quietly slipped down the stairs. Unbeknownst to me, one of the other tenants left the back door open which meant Ryuu snuck outside and straight out their open gate.
Immediate panic. I ran around the close vicinity before running back up the stairs to tell everyone Ryuu was missing. Kaia had to stay at the Airbnb while the rest of us went by foot and car to try to find him.
We called local vets, animal control, the SPCA. At some point, I made posts on missing dog groups on Facebook and posted on Instagram.
Facebook posts were the most beneficial — immediately, there was a sighting of him on W 33rd and Arbutus. It seemed like he was headed towards a greenway. Friends and family began searching. Strangers through this group started looking for him.
I’m out by W 49th all turned around because neither of us knows this city at all! But I didn’t think he’d cross traffic. Animal control received a call he was spotted at W 37th and Arbutus. Arbutus is a very busy street surrounded by many quiet neighbourhood roads. He could’ve been anywhere.
Kevin, speaking about his soul dog, says we need to rest. Tell everyone to turn in for now. It’s been five hours and no other sightings were made. But as soon as I walk in the house, I receive a message request on Facebook from someone with a fake name. My immediate thought is “is this a scam?” But I call anyway. He sends a photo of Ryuu. Kevin asks, “is that AI?” But the bump on his eye is there. We scope his Facebook and see he’s a real person.
When we get to Richmond to pick Ryuu up, 20 minutes away, Ryuu is walking with their other dog. He’s so happy to be with someone else. Kevin immediately starts crying, I offer this person any reward. He declines. Ryuu is saddened to have ended his adventure.
No words can express how thankful I am for all of the shares and reposts, but especially the ones who drove out or ran around to try to find him 🥺 we’re so lucky it did not turn for the worst & that he was found relatively quickly!

RYUUUUUU you scared so many people who love you so much 😭😭😭 such a Shiba!!! We are so relieved he was found! I can’t believe he was frolicking around for 5-6 hours!? If only we had footage of his POV lol. Miss you you silly Shiba ❤️ You are welcome to come stay with us whenever you don’t feel like going on a day trip or vacation, I’ll be a little hermit with you!!!

What the heck ryuu don’t you know you have a good life?! 😂 what a freaking scare and he’s just nonchalant about it but seriously omg I’m so glad he was found and returned 😭 I’m so glad there are still good people in the world who are willing to help 🥹

So glad he was found safe!! Such a great coming together of community as well! You love to see it! And of course Ryu being a typical Shiba. We would've felt the same if this had happened to Lupe, and I'm sure Lupe would've been just as confident as Ryu going on a little solo adventure. All the way to Richmond! At least Ryu knows where all the good food is!! 😂😂

So glad it was a happy ending, but also such a funny way he of course reacted. It reminds me of my dad dog who ran out of the backyard because he got scared by a storm & my brother left the gate open. He wondered away and when my dad got home from work he called me, I drove over & we spent the whole night looking. We could not find him. So that night I made flyers and posted on Facebook. Next day we posted the signs in the neighborhood including the local gas station, then got a call a few hours later from a neighbor half a mile away stating he had him. We came over and come to find out he crashed a Bach party with tons of people, became the life of the party, & stayed with them snuggling them on their couch. They were leaving for their wedding the next day and just happened to get gas that day seeing the sign before leaving.
