Some cities welcome you with open arms. Hanoi prefers a horn 🛵
The Old Quarter says it all. Endless traffic, motorbikes brushing past, shops spilling onto the pavement and heat everywhere. It should be exhausting. Somehow, it’s addictive 🫠
Here’s the twist: all that chaos was never really chaos.
Nearly a thousand years ago, the neighborhood grew around craft guilds: silk, blacksmiths, paper, silver. That’s how the legendary 36 guild streets were born, Hanoi’s commercial heart for centuries 🏮
Many trades have faded or shifted with the times, but the district never stopped doing business. Specialty shops still hold on between hotels and souvenir stalls, and the narrow tube houses still tell how families built for every inch of street frontage.
Maybe that’s the real reason walking these streets feels less like sightseeing and more like stepping into a story still being written 🖋️
Ever fallen for a city that felt like pure chaos... and missed it the moment you left?
