Homemade Cheese Naan 🧀
Soft, fluffy, and filled with melty mozzarella cheese! This homemade cheese naan is easy to make and pairs perfectly with butter chicken, curries, or even on its own!
Ingredients (makes about 6 naan)
* 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more as needed
* 1½ tsp instant yeast
* 1 tsp sugar
* 1–1¼ tsp salt
* ¾ tsp baking powder
* ⅛ tsp baking soda
* 3 tbsp Balkan or Greek yogurt
* 2 tbsp olive oil
* ½–¾ cup warm water, divided, as needed
* Mozzarella cheese, for stuffing
Instructions
1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and ¼ cup warm water. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, combine the salt, baking powder, baking soda, yogurt, and olive oil. Add the activated yeast mixture and 2 cups of flour. Gradually add the remaining warm water until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead until smooth and elastic, then cover and let rise until doubled in size. I like to knead by hand for about 5 min after the dough comes together in the stand mixer.
4. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Flatten each piece, fill with about 1/4-1/3 cup of cold shredded mozzarella, and pinch the edges together to seal.
5. Gently roll each portion into a naan and cook in a hot skillet or tawa until golden and bubbly on both sides.
6. Brush with melted garlic and cilantro butter and serve warm!
