The band (plus Fran). Some clips. Also I just stumbled across this corner near @theblueguitar ‘s old house where we shot a little performance in 2006. The universe provides these hints of eternity sometimes. Always bittersweet having to leave, thanks and til next time my beautiful Oz friends.

OFFICIAL VIDEO 🎥 “Commandeered Parade” by Ned Collette, second single from the album “Mixed Light” out August 28 on @itrecordsmelb (LP/CD/digital) @feedingtuberecords_rozztoxart (LP) @osrecs (CD)

While generally speaking the idea of making music videos fills me with dread, @mrsmedien and @raphaelfederer88 were clever enough to realise wandering endlessly through wintry fields in mud-caked shoes dressed like Columbo is exactly my idea of a great time. A wonderful couple of days, and as with all his films Max has lent a strange and poignant energy to the song. A huge thanks to them and everyone involved who helped out, danced, acted, filmed, edited, drove and assisted…

J’ai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage! French friends, if you’re planning to buy the new album, you could not make a better decision than to grab it from @microcultures_records I’m thrilled that we’ve worked out an unorthodox and rather old-school way of working together a little on this record, given that they didn’t have room in their schedule and I already had a couple of great labels lined up to put it out. Instead I’m sending some of my copies their way and they’re going to put the word out in France, which is a really important place for me, and we’re gonna do it all in a spirit of art and music and solidarity. THIS is exactly the way forward and out of this intolerable mess of monolithic digital warlords – simply to talk and communicate and share and sing about things that move and matter to us on a personal level. So yep, they have the LPs, they’ll have the CDs, and you should get behind ‘em. Jean-Charles has written a lovely and much more articulate little piece about it at their website, I’ve reposted their original post and link is in their bio, check it out. Je vous embrasse fort, NC

Thanks @chrisdevilleofficial and @stereogum for this wonderful write up, and a taste of the sheer chaos to come… 🐊💥

Link in bio for the full thing and the Commandeered Parade video in HIGH REZ.

When I was 19 I lived with Tim Pledger and Belinda Woods (and @willwillguthrie) in Wakanui St in Northcote. (No one really knew why three parallel streets in Melbourne had Māori names – Wakanui, Hakatere, Oamaru – but they spoke to a world I occasionally inhabited as a kid over in Wellington, buying comics and playing pinnies at the fish and chip shop on Aro Street with my cousin Stefan and his best mate Taika). Wakanui St was a formative, and looking back on it, pretty magical time in my life. Tim was a generation older than us, and already far down the creative road. We all played in his monumental and long-running (and still running, go see ‘em!) ecstatic-free-jazz-composition project Bohjass, and around that time he also played in one of the earliest iterations of my first band City City City. Tim, a country boy from Narrandera, taught me - all of us really - a million things about music and life and the avant garde, about what matters in music and what definitely doesn’t, about passion and playing hard and discipline and practise, but all whilst living with a kind of creative self-sufficience that serves to this day. It was a spiritual existence of a sort, and we cooked, played, drank, wrote and got around town together, did shitty cafe gigs for money, searched for firewood on building sites, watched The Bill together on a Saturday night, and took in all the neorealists from the video store down in Westgarth. The Bohjass shows were wild and full, people dancing like mad things to the most unlikely music, that would come in powerful waves led by Tim’s call to arms on tenor sax.

A couple of days in early Feb. Commandeered Parade single is out everywhere today!! Always a pleasure working with Max on these videos, the right mix of inspiration and chaos. And Tigris the good boy 🐶
