About 20 years now without you but who’s counting?
Before I ever became a filmmaker, I had a father who was one.
I wish I could sit with him now and talk about films, talk about the stories he wanted to tell but couldn’t, and the ones I want to tell, the things I’m trying to build with the love he left me to hold behind…There’s something beautiful about seeing him here, doing what he loved, and knowing that somewhere along the way, I found my way to it too.
Maybe filmmaking is one of the many ways I get to keep a part of you alive.
Rest well, Dad. I hope I make you proud.
As I work on INFERNO, my first film, I find myself thinking about this photograph a little differently. Here he is, doing something I’ve grown to love, and here I am, trying to build something of my own with a part of him that I’ve always carried.
I wish you were here to see what I’m making. To sit with me and watch footages, tell me what I got wrong, and perhaps remind me that there’s still another way to tell the story.
I don’t know if the love for filmmaking is something I inherited or something I found my way into on my own. But I know that making this film has made me miss you in ways I can’t always explain.
This one is for the stories we tell, the ones we leave behind, and the people who continue to live through them. 🎬🤍
Me in a few months in sha Allah!
