Fannie Mae sharply raised its mortgage-rate forecast, projecting the 30-year fixed rate will average 7.4% through the fourth quarter and 7.5% in 2027, as hotter-than-expected inflation pushes borrowing costs higher.

It's a steep increase from projections it made just a month ago, when the economists suggested the fourth quarter would see an average rate of 6.8% and the 2027 average would land around 6.7%.

Rising energy prices and persistent inflation are increasing expectations for another Federal Reserve rate hike, potentially keeping mortgage rates elevated longer and delaying meaningful affordability relief for homebuyers.

🔥🔥🔥 As a Real Estate Consultant committed to helping Clients Build Wealth through San Diego Real Estate, I Appreciate you keeping this conversation going, @homesdotcom For perspective, Freddie Mac’s average 30 year fixed mortgage rate peaked at 18.63% in October 1981. Predictions for 2027 aren’t guarantees and yesterday’s rates don’t decide your next move. The question is: where does opportunity meet affordability for you?
