On 19 September, a bike ride ended with seven broken ribs - some in multiple places, a fractured collarbone and shoulder blade, a partially collapsed lung and six days in hospital.

More than a month later, I’m still in pain and working through recovery. It has affected my work, my training and the everyday things I used to take for granted.

Looking at my damaged helmet is confronting. I can’t know exactly what would have happened without it, but I’m so grateful I was wearing it.

Please wear your helmet, even for a short ride. Make sure it fits properly and fasten the strap.

Every ride. Every time. 🤍

Oh my goodness, sending you so much love and healing energy! 🥹🤍 What an absolute nightmare of an accident, but so immensely grateful that your helmet did its job!

My Dad also had a cycling accident 20 years ago and for once didn’t wear a helmet. It was only a short trip, very hot and bang - it happened. He never fully recovered from it unfortunately. He lost his sense of taste and smell and has cognitive restrictions. So I keep telling everyone and especially our kids to always always wear the helmet!!! Even on the shortest of trips, whether bike or scooter!

The hospital told me straight out that they would not have been able to do anything if I hadn’t worn the helmet all those years ago. Weeks later I turned up to help at a club comp, and it was the first time I saw everyone wear a helmet. Take care of yourself. Klem.
