Building a custom home isn’t for the lighthearted. Trapper’s first piece of advice is to get the right team in place before anything else. Your builder, architect, and designer need to work together, not just alongside each other.

Then get honest with yourself about budget and timeline. Knowing what you’re getting into from day one is what keeps the process exciting instead of overwhelming.

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you before starting a big project?

To answer the question, I'd tell homeowners to decide on finishes and long-term upkeep early. Choosing the surfaces you'll live with every day is easier before the budget gets tight.
