story time: when my 4 year old asked if candy is unhealthy‼️

raising an intuitive eater does not mean always allowing our children to consume unlimited amounts of food and always saying yes to everything. raising an intuitive eater includes providing structure around meals and snacks, cultivating an environment where all foods fit, and encouraging kiddos check in with their bodies hunger and fullness cues (when age appropriate).

i want to hear from you:
▫️have your kiddos starting asking these questions?👇
▫️how do you feel your relationship with food would be different if your parents talked about candy this way?👇

ps - if you want to make peace with food and pass that peace along to your kiddos comment “benefit check” below and I will personally DM you the link to check your health insurance benefits and see how many free virtual 1:1 counseling sessions you have with our @find.food.freedom dietitian team🩵

I love this! So helpful when we’re drowning in Halloween candy and also have a 4yr old! 🙌

Oof, this hit me right in the feels! Thank you, not only for sharing the experience, but also for providing a framework for helpful language to use when speaking to our little ones about this. I WISH this was the conversation I experienced growing up-- it was not ...i ended up with a long standing ed that i am FINALLY in recovery from, so i am definitely aiming for honoring my son's innate intuition about food, and hope and pray he never loses that felt sense of trust in himself. Rather than listening to external sources about what they think are "healthy/ unhealthy" way to go, not placing labels on food for your kiddos!

Gah I wish I'd found you before I had my son!! Coming from a very disordered and restricted childhood i know now that I went the complete opposite way of full allowance without realizing it. Not the most balanced approach and definitely trickier to undo with my 13yo .

Idk if this is the perfect way to distinguish healthier foods from less nutrient dense foods but we say “real food” and “fun food” when talking about “healthy” vs “unhealthy” in our house. I try my best not to say healthy or unhealthy and good or bad. We just usually say we need to eat some real food WITH our fun food or BEFORE our fun food. My dietitian has also been able to help me when talking to my oldest about food and how to teach her to recognize her fullness cues rather than having to “clean her plate.” I grew up in a household where having a clean plate was praised and rewarded with less nutrient dense foods and I don’t want my daughter to think she needs to earn her food.

Whew, this takes me back to when my oldest was in Kinder and a friend at her lunch table told her pb & j sandwiches were unhealthy, which was literally the only sandwich she would eat. She told me this on the way to the store to buy her birthday cookies to bring to class. I had to do a few big deep breaths before I could respond. 😅 It paved the way for many wonderful anti diet nutrition speaking opportunities at her school, but wooooo weeee, that hit me like a ton of bricks.

Yes 🙌 we had a similar experience - my daughter whipped out the word unhealthy out of nowhere and I was like where did you learn that word? We had a very similar conversation - one of the first times (of what will be many I’m sure) where I saw outside influence creeping in!
