Hello and welcome to Common Thread Psychology!

Here at Common Thread, our philosophy is simple; that all human beings are connected by shared experiences, emotions, and needs. Whether we’re navigating anxiety, relationship struggles, grief, trauma, or identity, there’s a common thread that runs through all human experience: the need to feel seen, understood, and supported.

We believe therapy is a place to explore those threads - the ones that have shaped who you are, and the ones you are ready to untangle or to weave in new ways. Our approach is grounded in evidence-based care and guided by the belief that connection is at the heart of healing.

Therapy at Common Thread is about gently untangling what’s no longer serving you, reconnecting with your sense of self, and finding new ways to relate to yourself, to others, and to what matters most.

We work with teens, adults, and couples, offering thoughtful, down-to-earth therapy that makes space for the complexity of being human. Here, you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up as yourself, exactly as you are.

And we are so glad you’re here 🥹

Has caring for others come at the expense of caring for yourself?

This month’s book club pick is Codependent No More by Melody Beattie. Codependency can look like tying your sense of worth or emotional well being to someone else, constantly prioritizing their needs, fixing their problems, or feeling responsible for their emotions…often at the expense of your own.

This book offers a reminder that we can love others deeply without losing ourselves in the process. Healthy boundaries aren’t selfish, and prioritizing yourself isn’t something to feel guilty about.

Sleep work is my passion. One of the reasons this work means so much to me is because I know firsthand how debilitating chronic insomnia can be. I know how exhausting it can be when sleep becomes something you dread rather than look forward to. When bedtime brings anxiety, panic and defeat. When you’re constantly worrying about how you will function on such little sleep, or when you’re running on empty day after day.

And I also know how life changing it can be to start sleeping again ❤️

Now, as a therapist specializing in sleep, I get to help people untangle the patterns, fears and frustrations that keep them stuck in that cycle.

Everyone deserves to experience a bedtime that feels peaceful rather than stressful, and I am truly honoured to get to be a part of helping so many people find their way back to that.

If you or someone you know struggles with chronic insomnia, feel free to reach out at info@commonthreadpsychology.com or book in for a free consult at www.commonthreadpsychology.com.

Night terrors can be unsettling to witness, especially when they involve your child. Here are a few things that may help reduce them:

• Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Overtiredness can trigger night terrors.
• Prioritize enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can make episodes more likely.
• Reduce stress and overstimulation before bed with a predictable, calming routine.
• Notice patterns. If episodes happen around the same time each night, scheduled awakenings may help some children.

Night terrors are different from nightmares. Your child may scream, thrash, or appear terrified while still being asleep, and they usually won’t remember the episode in the morning. If episodes are frequent, cause injury, or continue to concern you, talk with your healthcare provider.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is stay calm and keep them safe.

Our new blog is up! This month we’re talking about burnout, and specifically how recovery requires looking deeper than just what you’re doing to examine why you’re doing it as well.

Thank you for allowing me to climb aboard my CBT-I soapbox for a moment!!!

Therapists - I’m curious…how many of you make it a habit to ask/explore sleep with each and every new client? If you don’t ask about it…why not?

Waking up at 3 am? Cortisol might be part of the picture, but not the whole one.

Cortisol naturally rises in the hours before waking to help prepare your body for the day. That’s normal.

But when you’re under chronic stress, your nervous system can become more alert, and your brain may have a harder time settling back into sleep when you wake in the early hours.

The answer is less about obsessing over lowering your cortisol and more about looking at what’s happening during the day.

A few places to start:

🛌 Build in small pockets of recovery throughout the day, not just when you finally collapse into bed.
🛌 Make space for *intentional* worry earlier (think journaling, making to do lists…) in the day instead of letting your brain bring up everything for the first time at 3am.
🛌 Get morning light and keep a consistent wake time to support your circadian rhythm.
🛌 When you wake early, resist checking the time or calculating how much sleep you have left. This only adds more pressure.
🛌 If you’re wide awake and frustrated, get out of bed for a quiet activity until you feel sleepy again.

Your sleep is influenced by more than what happens at bedtime. The stress you carry throughout the day can come with you into the night.

If you struggle with your sleep, comment HELPMESLEEP below and I’ll send evidence based sleep tips straight to your inbox, along with a link to The Better Sleep Blueprint - a 6 week, evidence based CBT-I program for overcoming insomnia.
