The Akurugraphy Exhibition kicked off last night. It showcases the letterforms of Sri Lanka. An exploration of their beauty, their history, and the journey of @mooniakhq, highlighting their years of dedication and the remarkable progress they have made. The event is a collaboration between the @geoffreybawatrust and the Mooniak team, including @pathumego @kosala.senevirathne and @rajithamanamperi

The exhibition is open to the public from today until November 8th, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

‘Akurugraphy’ is an exhibition of letterforms. An exploration of their form, their history, and where their future lies beyond just reading the written word.
Curated by Colombo-based design studio ano type foundry Mooniak, this interactive exhibition maps the development of written and digital Sinhala, Tamil, and Latin letterforms in Sri Lanka.

Different gestures to explain what typography is, and why it matters—Over the last decade I've worked with my friends and collaborators on building community, knowledge, tools, fonts and software for better communications for Sri Lankan audiences through @mooniakhq and @akurucollective. Best part of this self appointed job of being the spokesperson and a "fixer" for Letterforms is seeing how faces light up when I articulate how fonts are really infrastructure, how writing is a form of time-travelling or tell stories of the secret life of Sinhala Punctualtion mark. Akurugraphy Exhibition is a culmination of our various approaches to articulating the value of typography and it is an expression of our practice of conscious engaging with letterforms. This is me conducting one of walkthroughs at the exhibition. Make sure to catch one if you're in Colombo before closing in November. by @pathumego

Team Sangamam recently had the privilege of taking a guided tour with Pathum through Akurugraphy, a phenomenal exhibition at the Geoffrey Bawa Space.

Presenting a decade-long body of practice by Colombo-based type foundry Mooniak, the exhibition dives deep into the history, culture, and future of letterforms across Sinhala, Tamil, and Latin scripts.

From archival specimens to modern software development, Akurugraphy highlights how the digitization of our scripts shapes legibility, representation, and language survival in the digital era.

Had a blast last Saturday with Ananda Jagoda, one of my local design hero’s talking about Design Before Computers. Ananda is one of those masters of graphic design who transitioned from the manual to the digital era gracefully, and made his mark in the process. He started as a lettering artist and visualizer, later becoming Chief Creative Officer at SmartMedia, an internationally award-winning annual report design company in Colombo. His personal archive of type specimens, Letraset sheets, and other materials was at the center of the discussion. by @pathumego

Our little niece Thisali (7) visited us and was hanging out in the studio. And she wrote this on the whiteboard; her name and class at school. Now she’s is in 2-A and she used to be in 1-D. We are all driven by need to leave a mark wherever we have been. And leaving knowledge and our thoughts behind that can transcend our time and space coordinates. It’s a bit sad to see little Thisali has her identity attached to the classroom — an arbitrary segregation of children to discipline them. At least they could name these classes with something more exciting for kids so it doesn’t sound like they are in a prison. by @pathumego

These are from the Puskola (Ola leaf) manuscript workshop at Akurugraphy exhibition from yesterday. Hemmathagama Piyadassi Thero is a fantastic scholar and a modern authority on the subject. His opening lecture is one of the best that I’ve ever listened to. Effortlessly weaving deep historical and empirical research, Buddhist and Pali chantings, lived experiences into narrative style close to බණ (a Buddhist sermon done in Sinhala) He founded and runs the only institution dedicated for preserving this craft with the vision of developing this living tradition as a widespread craft beyond a mere Buddhist tradition. He runs the only accredited course on Palm leaf manuscript writing in Kurunegala.

There is a traditional letterpress machine on display at our exhibition. @sajaanpeiris from @wasilva_museum renovated the press to its original condition and it is fully operational.
