Dementia is called the long goodbye, but living it with someone you love is hard to put into words.

When a parent has dementia, the grief begins long before they’re gone. You watch memory loss change conversations, relationships and pieces of the person you’ve known your entire life.

The strong woman who raised me and my four siblings by herself as a single mother? I like to think she’s still in there somewhere.

There’s a name for what families living with dementia experience: anticipatory grief. You’re grieving changes while still loving and caring for the person who is right in front of you.

If you’re caring for an aging parent with dementia, navigating the stages of dementia, or watching someone you love experience memory loss, you probably understand why it can feel like the slowest goodbye.

13 weeks post-op from my total hysterectomy, and the reality is, it took about 6 weeks before I started settling.

Those first few weeks were also when I figured out what actually helped my recovery along, so I made a list of everything I reached for most. More on that below.

Then I hit 6 weeks and I was healed on paper. But I still didn’t feel like the person who walked into that surgery.

Nobody prepares you for that gap. The doctor clears you. But your body and your nervous system don’t always move at the same pace.

I’m still figuring out what feeling like myself looks like now.

What does healed mean to you? The paper version or the felt version?

And if you’re preparing for a hysterectomy, comment LIST and I’ll send you everything I wish I’d had before surgery.

WebMD says it’s hormones. My Spotify says it’s 1987. Both are probably right 🤓

Probably needed a hug, but I became hyper-independent instead 😅

To be 55 and loving on 16-year-old me, what a time to be alive. I have so much compassion for that girl. I wish I could hug her and tell her, “You’ll be okay. You’ll figure it out. Slow and steady wins the race.”

We spend the first 18 years of our lives having a childhood, and if my life is any indication, the rest of our lives unpacking it.

Maybe that’s part of healing your inner child in midlife: finally understanding why you became so independent, and having compassion for the younger version of you who was just trying to figure it all out.

If any of this makes you think, “hmm, me too”, or “wow, I get the part about becoming hyper-independent because I learned early how to take care of myself”, you’re not alone. You’re welcome here. taken in Colorado, USA by @patrina.odette

Moms in our 50s know the empty nest stage of motherhood is full of contradictions.

You raise your kids to be independent, you’re proud of the lives they’re building, and you still miss having everyone under one roof.

My kids’ bedrooms haven’t changed much since they left for college, and I’m perfectly happy with that.

Would you turn a room into a mahjong room, just for fun?

Fellow empty nesters, did you keep your kids’ rooms the same or turn them into something new?

I’m 116 days post-op from my total hysterectomy, and I’ve learned so much about the healing process.

Day 1 me didn’t really know what was ahead. I had pain at the incision sites, and my mind and body were so fatigued.

Day 116 me has energy, is sleeping well, feels well enough to travel. I’m living life, and enjoying the journey along the way.

I created a list of all the things I reached for most after my hysterectomy. Not just the obvious stuff, but the little things that made those first few weeks so much easier.

Comment LIST and I’ll send you everything I wish I’d had before hysterectomy surgery.

Day 1 of the Grandma Strength Training Just in Case Plan.

The most honest longevity strategy I’ve implemented!

Strong bones. Strong muscles. Strong enough to pick up my granddaughter for as long as she’ll let me.

And preparing me to throw hands if necessary. Haha I know violence isn’t the answer. But I’d like to have options. 🙃

I almost quit before I even properly began 😅

Somewhere along the way I picked up the idea that you have to lock in your niche, your format, your “voice” before you’re allowed to post.

But sometimes the “right” way to do something is just... the way that’s actually you.

Have you ever found yourself trying to fit into a box, that just didn’t work?

Wait what am I even doing in here?

I came in here for something, but what on earth was it?

Being in your 50s is weird.
On paper, I’m 55.
When I’m with my girlfriends, I’m 35.
After 8:00 p.m., I’m 85.
When I can’t remember what I walked into the room for, I’m 105.
When 80s music comes on, I’m 15 again.
