Meet went better than I could have ever expected. I finished 9/9 with all white lights, a PR squat, a PR total of 1817, and took home the open men’s best lifter award. I am incredibly thankful the good lord has blessed me to still be able to compete in this sport and to have finally improved my previous best total from 2019. I absolutely could not have done it without my handler/wife @michealemorgan, she’s always a rockstar on meet day. Big shoutout to the @uspc.pl crew, as usual they ran a tremendous meet.

I was at the meet this weekend and couldn’t help but notice many lifters and handlers struggling to wrap knees. So I wanted to make a quick video and cover my favorite knee wrapping technique that is fast and efficient.

Completely straighten out leg so that your knee is locked out. Start wrapping just above the knee cap at the bottom on the quadriceps. Begin applying the wrap so that you will be wrapping towards the outside of the knee. I have found that this helps with preventing valgus collapse (knee knock). The first rotation is going to be a little looser than the rest to anchor the start of the wrap in place. From there I like wrapping down 3-4 rotations down (or however many it takes to get to just below knee cap), making an X across the knee cap and then wrapping back up as many rotations as you can get. When applying the wrap, I stretch the wrap tight at the start of each rotation and pull it tightly across the top of knee then just lay the wrap across the backside. When you get towards the end of the wrap use your hand or a set of needle nose plier to place under the wrap and pull the tongue of the wrap under the last rotation to finish. Pull the tongue tight to anchor it down.

Pro tip: if you’re struggling with depth, placing the tongue of the wrap up at the top of knee MAY give the illusion that top of your knee is higher than it is to the side judges.

Bench made some huge strides during prep. Once I got the hang of the slingshot, the overload training was fun. I was happy these moved but not completely with my second for the dip. Benching on new equipment can be a little tough. Definitely not an excuse for anything. I know I sat too far back on my opener and stressed out @mccoystrength_lifter 😂 But we figured out quickly what to do for the 2nd and it went much better. I was just happy the bar came down low enough (as low as it was possible) and my feet could touch the ground (we're safe @misspowerhause lol). But the great thing about this sport if you're a good competitor, you walk away from every meet with more to work on.

A big thank you to my handler @mccoystrength_lifter for timing warm-ups. I don't know attempt numbers or watch any video of my lifts in a meet. I go by how Infeel and what my handler and coach are seeing. Since the 2nd attempt was a PR, I made the decision to scratch my 3rd to save for deads. Which I've not done in a meet before but pretty cool to be in the position to do so.

Thank you to @johnbob_eatsalot for loading everything during warm-ups and being the videographer.

Thank you to all of the @flexgymva spotting crew for loading and taking the bar when rack is called because I won't move to do so. Sometimes it's hard to hear commands so I rely on spotters during squat and bench to help me into the rack once the final command is called.

Here are my deadlift attempts from the Heart of a Lion.

There were more milestones hit than just hitting a new PR for my 3rd attempt. I pulled 500lb in prep for the first time. Very big pulls have always been saved for the platform. This was also the first time I've pulled 500+lb TWICE in a meet.

Coming to the platform for my 2nd attempt, I knew what was on the bar. I'm the lifter that doesn't know my 2nd or 3rd attempts. Ever. I never know what I've lifted until after the meet. Knowing attempts distracts and makes my overthinking brain go berserk. Before my headphones came off, I saw the weight and I knew I had no choice but to execute because it wasn't the end goal.

Coming to the platform for my 3rd attempt, the announcer had switched to announcing weight in kilos. I knew this was on purpose. But I kept my cues going in my head. The biggest one being patience. I have a tendency to rush set up when I'm nervous/excited. Which is why when I posted the 3rd attempt after the meet, I included the set up I normally crop out. So you could feel that patience with me.

A huge thank you to my handler @mccoystrength_lifter for timing all of my warm-ups and working with Coach @paynterperiodization to lock in all of my attempts. He knows how important deadlifts are to me. The deadlift goal always matters the most. We all have that one lift. And since it is the last lift of a meet, it is always the hardest to achieve. The other lifts matter and I work very hard at them. But I work harder at deadlifts.

To my nutrition coach @bowles_body_performance I know this also wouldn't have been possible without your guidance. Even after the last deadlift, I felt like I had a few more attempts in me.

Thank you to @johnbob_eatsalot for loading everything during warm-ups and being the videographer.

Squats have been the hardest to get back on track. I still have to wear maternity leggings in the gym because the waistband in regular leggings are too painful 😂🫠  But this is the smoothest and strongest they've moved at this weight! Little by little, we're getting there.

Thank you to @johnbob_eatsalot and @notoriousk_pwr for loading everything during warm-ups and getting videos.

A very big thank you to my handler @mccoystrength_lifter for timing all of my warm-ups perfect, working with Coach @paynterperiodization to lock in all of my attempts that kept me on target, and back spotting.

Thank you to all of the @flexgymva spotting crew for keeping me safe and keeping the energy up.

What. A. DAY!!!

I'll post a full meet recap later but here is one of the highlights of my day.

Here is my 3rd attempt deadlift at 520lb and a new PR!!!

If you knew what I was coming back from. If you knew the work it took to get back here. If you knew what I'm working towards. If you knew any of it.

No matter the battle. The ongoing struggles. Somehow. Some way. We make it to the other side 💙

Weighed in at 147.6lb
Total: 1,225.7lb
DOTS: 575.99

My first 500+lb pull in a meet 2 yrs ago. 39 weeks to prep for it. This video still gives me chills. Still brings tears to my eyes because I remember all of the work. The drive. The sacrifice.

Success doesn't come from what you do occasionally, but what you do consistently. And that is what Coach @paynterperiodization has been for for me. Consistent. For over 10 years, I've been lucky enough to have a coach that truly wants me to succeed and does everything he can to help me reach my goals.

After last year's diagnosis, biopsies, ER visits, surgeries, and recovery, I've been fighting my way back. When I was cleared to lift by my doctor, it was difficult, slow going, and a complete mind fuck. I couldn't feel part of my body, 2.5lb had me holding on to something stable and my entire body shaking from the effort, and I needed help walking more than a few minutes. I was lifting but no goal other than trying to move any kind of weight. I was so frustrated with my body. With tears in my eyes, I typed out a message to my coach about what meet I could tentatively (if follow-ups stayed clear) set sights on the following year. I needed a goal to focus on. I was drowning and needed something to work towards. And I said what I wanted to try for said meet. Something I'd never attempted before at any meet. He didn't make me feel stupid for suggesting it. It was a huge ask. Something that some people have snickered at when they asked what I wanted to hit. Was going to try to do. But Coach @paynterperiodization had one thing to say. One sentence:"We're going to make that happen."

51 weeks to work. 51 weeks to start over at weights I haven't been at and struggle with in more than 7-8 years. But I'm determined. And I'm making headway.

I wouldn't be where I am now without Coach @Paynterperiodization . I've done all of the work (as he would say) but I couldn't have gotten to where I am without his guidance and flawless programming.

Happy National Coaches Day to Coach Tim @paynterperiodization 🫡
