A world on fire — and a few of the faces of those risking it all to protect others.

I’ve recently been doing a story for @NatGeo about the record-breaking fires across the Western US and beyond (coming out soon). Here are a few images from the resilient @salt_lake1 crew - boots on the ground - that I met in recently in Colorado. They are now in Idaho on the frontlines of another inferno.

Yesterday everyone was tragically reminded how wild Land firefighters risk everything as a firefighting helicopter - the second of the season - crashed in Utah. Air crew coordinate with ground crews to create to dual offensive.

I’m grateful to all the heroic and selfless firefighters on the ground and in the sky - and their support teams - working “the line” all over - daily, weekly, monthly, yearly — for the rest of us. So saddened by the tragedies this fire season - now predicted to go all year.

Images from the forthcoming story and older ones when a fire came to my town’s front door.

A few aerial views of Bears Ears National Monument in Utah and some of land it included before its recent cuts.

This July, 91% of the monument (and a similar percentage of Escalante) were removed from national monument status.

What is even more alarming to me, is Bears Ears was a collaborative effort with a commission of five native tribes (Hopi, Navajo, Zuni, Ute mountain Ute & Ute Uintah and Ouray) and the federal government to protect sacred sites and cultural and natural resources for future generations. Now, once again, those lands face an uncertain future in years of legal fights and the tribal commission was disbanded and their tribal names have been removed from any remaining monument signs.

I continue to ponder how we can bring conservation concepts back into the Conservative Party, a place it once readily resided. Public opinion strongly supports the monuments at their original size, yet these public lands and more are quickly eroding to private interests.

Chaco Canyon in New Mexico appears to be next on the list.

A few frames from the Navajo Nation. I’m honored to be visiting here again to present my stories about land, water and the many native souls I’ve documented fighting to protect their homes and beyond.

Thanks to locals here who invited me: I’ll be talking to the Shiprock (3rd image) High School tmrw afternoon.

In the meantime, I’ll be marveling at the vastness of landscape here - which often rivals the humor and kindness of heart here. Thanks @vital.impacts for seeing the value in student talks and the next gen.

What future does this photo make you think of?

As part of our exploration of soil and water, guest editor Pete McBride (@pedromcbride) shared otherworldly images of real places on our planet. Our audience used those photos as inspiration for their own super short soilpunk stories envisioning the future on Earth.

Pete describes this picture as “a beached boat on the flanks of a diminished Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir, reminding us of wetter times not long ago.”

Swipe to read what Kelli Fitzpatrick (@fitzauthor) thought of in response!! 🛶🌱 ➡️

Fall Flying: The magic of low and slow flight - thanks to a 1978 Super Cub.

I spent much of my life flying in this with my father through the seasons. Such a treat to have taken it over and kept it airworthy.

This National Public Lands Day, I’m helping tell one of the most important public lands stories of our time: the story of the public standing up for their shared lands — and how we need even more in the future. Our public lands require every generation to use their voice to hand them ‘as they are’ to the next.

I’m proud to be part of On Common Ground @on_common_ground_ , a six-part podcast exploring the history, meaning, and current threats facing the lands we all share.

Listen to On Common Ground wherever you get your podcasts. What are you doing for National Public Lands Day?

Some Good News: The Confluence inside the Grand Canyon - between the Colorado and the Little Colorado rivers has been protected as a sacred site by the Navajo Nation.

The specific site has been at the crosshairs of development pressures for over a decade - from a billion dollar tramway proposal to hydroelectric dams. I once climbed out of the canyon at this spot (brutal) with @kevinfedarkoauthor and others to meet Renae Yellowhorse (image 2) to understand the development risks.

Thanks to Renae and a committed group of predominantly Navajo grandmothers that led this fight, many who I had the pleasure to meet, interview and showcase in my documentary “Into the Grand Canyon” they have helped protect this place - and your National Park vistas around it — for good.

That is some refreshing good news in a world filled with little, especially around our public lands, parks and monuments.

“This victory does not mean that we oppose progress or opportunity for our people. It means that progress must have wisdom behind it. There are places where development can occur and there are places that carry responsibilities greater than ourselves. Tooh Ahidiilíní is one of those places. Once a sacred landscape is lost, no amount of money can bring it back.” Rita Bilagody - Save the Confluence leader.

“Water is as much a story of soil as it is of oceans, rivers, rain, or ice. Come hell or high water, one always finds the other.” - @pedromcbride

Guest edited by photographer and National Geographic Explorer Pete (Pedro) McBride, our water issue, Hell or High, explores the relationship between soil and water, resilience, new beginnings, fish, and the ways that, with all hands on deck, we will make it through.

Keep reading to hear how rivers led Pete to a life of storytelling on their behalf–and what he’s learned from watching unlikely futures become reality.

Pete McBride is a photographer, filmmaker, and author whose work spans 75 countries, from Everest to Antarctica. A National Geographic Explorer and Adventurer of the Year, he received the 2025 Ansel Adams Award for conservation photography. His latest book, Witness to Water, is a two-decade personal narrative of the Colorado River. by @pedromcbride

Exciting New Book Alert: “Wild Silence” - is my new kids book — for youngsters and any adult with an inner child. Based on my earlier Seeing Silence book, this version includes new images, untold stories, amazing illustrations and factoids about our natural world, its soundscapes and its fragility. It also gives info how we can engage to work to protect wild places and its natural symphonies that often go unnoticed.

This book spans 25 years of work, across all seven continents and reminds us about the wonder and awe of our shared world.
We live in a noisy world. I’ve learned that if you can hug some quiet outside, it often hugs you back.

To learn more, or pre-order, check out below at the link in my bio. More to come with offers and talks so stay tuned.
