What future does this photo make you think of?

As part of our exploration of soil and water, guest editor Pete McBride (@pedromcbride) shared otherworldly images of real places on our planet. Our audience used those photos as inspiration for their own super short soilpunk stories envisioning the future on Earth.

Pete describes this picture as “a beached boat on the flanks of a diminished Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir, reminding us of wetter times not long ago.”

Swipe to read what Kelli Fitzpatrick (@fitzauthor) thought of in response!! 🛶🌱 ➡️

And if you want to read more, check out Hell or High, Tractor Beam’s water issue! Longer stories are available on our website and substack.

What does 1% hope look like?

For Renée Yellow Horse, it meant organizing her community to challenge the proposed billion-dollar Grand Canyon Escalade development threatening their land and water and helping turn the vote around.

As we await the upcoming verdict on the Roadless Rule, we’re holding onto that 1%.

Because sometimes that’s all you need to keep fighting for public lands.

While showcasing some of my landscape photography at a local Aviation Expo, my first customer was the super talented Nat Geo photographer Pete McBride!! 😃

His photography and storytelling has been a huge inspiration to me and played a part in motivating me to pursue photography as a career and platform for documenting meaningful stories.

Check out his amazing work and stories @pedromcbride. Thanks for the support Pete and honored to now be hat buddies! 😄 🧢

“Water is as much a story of soil as it is of oceans, rivers, rain, or ice. Come hell or high water, one always finds the other.” - @pedromcbride

Guest edited by photographer and National Geographic Explorer Pete (Pedro) McBride, our water issue, Hell or High, explores the relationship between soil and water, resilience, new beginnings, fish, and the ways that, with all hands on deck, we will make it through.

Keep reading to hear how rivers led Pete to a life of storytelling on their behalf–and what he’s learned from watching unlikely futures become reality.

Pete McBride is a photographer, filmmaker, and author whose work spans 75 countries, from Everest to Antarctica. A National Geographic Explorer and Adventurer of the Year, he received the 2025 Ansel Adams Award for conservation photography. His latest book, Witness to Water, is a two-decade personal narrative of the Colorado River.

Now Playing on The Land Bulletin Podcast: The Colorado River Through the Lens of Peter McBride
🎙️ Special Guest this week: Peter McBride - filmmaker, author, and photographer

What happens when you dedicate 20 years to following a river from its headwaters to the sea? For @pedromcbride, it has meant gaining an eye-opening perspective on water, the West, and the people who work and live on Western lands. A filmmaker, author, and photographer who grew up on a Colorado ranch, Peter joins Haley to discuss the decades he’s spent documenting the Colorado River and the changing landscapes, communities, and ecosystems that depend on it.

Through the power of storytelling, Peter hopes to break through apathy and inspire greater stewardship of our water and Western lands. As irrigation ditches run dry and decades of footage reveal an alarming trend in the Colorado River Delta, it’s more important than ever to document these changes and bring greater awareness to drought, conservation, and the collaboration needed to protect the West’s most vital resource.
