How would you answer this question? ——— What is storied decor? When I use that phrase this is what I mean… *Decor and furnishings with patina from a past life! *Often pieces made by hand! *Always pieces with timeless charm! *Decor that has a personal resonance! *Pieces that do more than simply look pretty…they connect you to: those who came before; memories you treasure; and/or a wider world out there! by @penderandpeony
Pender & Peony… a mission… Will you join us? by @penderandpeony
In my recent survey, many of you lovely people said... you were here for my decorating advice, so I thought I should take a minute and spell out my design principles: No. 1 Choose happy colors that make you smile! No. 2 Mix patterns for interest, especially florals. No. 3 Give heirlooms and antique collections pride of place. No. 4 Let balance, tradition, and symmetry provide restraint. No. 5 Arrange furniture for conversation. No. 6 Shop auctions, thrifts, and consignment for one of a kind deals, but always invest in classics with longevity. No. 7 Fill your rooms with mementos, art, and decor that reflect your personality and provides inspiration. No. 8 Don't forget details matter! No. 9 Barren walls are a missed opportunity. No. 10 Everyone should have a home that delights them, but it my take some time and creativity to get there! by @penderandpeony

As a Rose Medallion dealer and collector who specializes in pre-1891 porcelains here’s what I look for FIRST when authenticating a piece… No. 1 Gilt details in the figures’ hair and clothing. It’s not enough that the piece has a gilt rim or gilt between the reserves. No. 2 Soft luminous colors with shading. If the colors are flat and acidic that usually indicates a vintage piece. No. 3 Tight intricate detailing. There should be beautifully rendered butterflies and birds. Tight scrolling vines between the reserves and unique hand painted designs. Want to learn more about how I date and value Rose Medallion porcelain? Comment “Rose Medallion “ for a link to my guide! by @penderandpeony

What is up with the punch bowl? Why are there so many? A punch bowl — you know that vessel you put an orchid in! 😉 You hear punch and you probably flashback to parties at your grandmother‘s house where a syrupy red concoction swam inside a large bowl, but the history of punch goes way way back to the mid 1600s. Merchants and sailors via the British East India company partook of local liquor concoctions because the beer had gone flat and the wine wasall gone. On the other side of the British colonial empire rum is flowing out of the West Indies and making its way to England. It was a little rough around the edges, but cut it with some water, sugar, citrus, and spice that mixture learned in India—and you have something worth tasting. Pretty soon every fashionable British aristo and wealthy merchant was tipping some form of punch at parties and fancy dinners. As one song from 1730 put it, “Speak well of hock, mum, cider and perry, but you must drink punch if you mean to be merry.” What do you serve this fabulous mixed libation in? A bowl- sterling if you’re hobnobbing with the royals and ceramic or glass if you work for a living, but have disposable income. Give it some time and the punch bowl becomes a ubiquitous symbol of hospitality in the English speaking world. This example is a gorgeous porcelain in a rose mandarin / medallion crossover pattern from the Chinese export trade from about 1830 to 1860. This is right as the heyday of punch is declining and soon the new favorite will be the cocktail. Now I can’t imagine pouring an acidic punch in this elaborately decorated bowl, but the next time I use a punch bowl for an orchid or to hold my vintage Christmas ornaments, I will imagine it’s role in merry making and life of revelry! by @penderandpeony
Which are you?? Team Rose Canton or Rose Medallion?? It’s funny how passionate we Famille Rose fans can be! I hear from collectors all the time who are solely devoted to one of these Chinese export patterns or the other. How do you feel? Rose Canton features birds, flowers, butterflies, and insects, while Rose Medallion shows people and flora and fauna. This terminology can be a bit confusing because historically the export patterns from the 19th century were generally called Canton or Rose Canton because of the Chinese port city where these were shipped out. But now scholars and collectors distinguish between the Famille Rose patterns more precisely: Rose Canton, Rose Medallion, Rose Mandarin, and Rose Celadon. Which team am I? Team Famille Rose! I love all of the pre-1900 examples whether RC or RM! by @penderandpeony
Subtle details have their own sort of drama. While often quiet, the elegance is striking. These finally crafted antiques add depth and interest to a room. We talk a lot about quiet luxury when it comes to fashion, but in the antiques world there are similarly understated pieces that echo the same goals of craftsmanship, luxurious materials, and timeless design. They feel effortlessly chic. These pieces of furniture and decor often fly under the radar, but they can really take on a staring role when used thoughtfully. What’s your favorite “quiet luxury” antique? I’m suggesting these three as deserving of a spot on the list: oxblood Chinese porcelain, antique copper, and beautiful inlaid decor. 🎶I’m all about that base bout that base GARLAND no icky skimpy here! Haha I just couldn’t resist! 🤭🤭 As I said the other day, skimpy faux garlands are out and there’s no excuse for them when today’s designs look like this! This is the base garland for this year‘s Christmas garland kit and, yes, you can buy it by itself. She is a stunner whether styled alone for a naturalistic look or bedecked with ribbons and florals. Here I have hung her from my English hutch in the entryway, which is filled with my favorite English antiques and gives a warm welcome into my home. Just to show you how versatile this base garland is you can use it on top of hutches, on your mantle, or running down your stair banister. And I don’t want to brag, but it’s a seriously unbeatable price. Seriously! Comment garland for a direct link! by @penderandpeony
