Today, we honour the memory of the children who never returned home. We also take time to recognize the strength and resilience of residential school survivors. May their stories never be forgotten, and may they inspire us to continue building a Canada founded on respect and justice for everyone.

☎️ If you are a residential school survivor, you can call 1-866-925-4419 twenty four hours a day, seven days a week for emotional crisis referral services and information on other health supports from the Government of Canada. by @philiplawrencecan

Bond yields jumped again this week.

You won’t feel it or notice it right away. But this has major implications for Canadians. Higher yields raise what the federal government pays to refinance its debt. This means that interest costs still go up, even if the Bank of Canada holds it’s rate at 2.25%.

Borrowing costs are going to quietly climb for families, small businesses, and mortgage renewals.

Mark Carney can’t ignore the debt for much longer. Real consequences are not on the way, they have already arrived and are seeping into Canadians pocketbooks. by @philiplawrencecan

I had a productive meeting with VIA Rail yesterday in Ottawa.

I was very clear: we need a train option that arrives on time in Toronto before 9:00am, not 9:30am or 10:00am.

It was a good conversation and they committed to staying in touch and keeping me updated, and I will be doing the same with them.

Keep sending me your stories, they are helping make the case for how much we need an early morning train in Northumberland—Clarke! by @philiplawrencecan

VIA Rail says it needed to cancel train 641 due to low ridership.

The Liberal government says we need to spend billions on Alto.

Something isn’t quite adding up... by @philiplawrencecan

Just yesterday VIA announced their plans to cancel train 641, and my office has been receiving non-stop phone calls and emails ever since.

I am pleased to stand along side my fellow representatives from the area calling on VIA to clearly explain their decision, and keep this service that our residents rely upon.

VIA listened to us before. We are asking them to listen again. by @philiplawrencecan

I am very, very disappointed in this decision.

We all fought so hard to bring back train 651 years ago, and we were successful thanks to the advocacy of members of our community.

So we’re going to do it again. If you are a regular user of train 641, please contact my office and share your experiences, I will bring your voice directly to executives at VIA.

Together we will remind VIA just how important this service is to communities like ours. by @philiplawrencecan

25 years later, the horror of what happened on 9/11 has not faded. We remember those who died, those who lost loved ones, and the bravery of the first responders. It was a day of unspeakable anger, heartbreak, and tragedy, one that we can never forget.

It was also a day where we came together, as people and as countries. Here in Canada, the generous people of Gander, Newfoundland, gave over 6,000 diverted passengers a place to stay in their small town, opening the doors of their homes and welcoming in the stranger. Canada then partnered with the United States in the Global War on Terror through our participation in Operation Enduring Freedom and the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

We were neighbours then, and we are neighbours now. To our American friends: Canada remembers your pain, your grief, and your heartache.

We will never forget. by @philiplawrencecan

The quieter part of today’s announcement is that bond yields are rising again.

The federal government’s interest bill was $54 billion last year. That’s projected to grow to $59 billion this year and $81 billion by 2031. In fact, most of this year’s borrowing is just refinancing old debt at the new and higher rate.

When the government’s cost of borrowing climbs, so does the cost of a mortgage, a small-business loan, and every dollar the federal government pays in interest. This isn’t just something going on in Ottawa, households across Canada are going to be feeling it whether they know about it or not.

This climb is not sustainable and is going to catch up to us if we don’t act quickly. We need a government that treats other people’s money like it matters. by @philiplawrencecan
