A requiem that moves us all 🕊️

What an unforgettable performance! With the poetry of Wilfred Owen, written in the trenches of the First World War, and the words of the Latin Requiem Mass, Britten’s War Requiem filled the hall. A mass for all victims of war, written for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, and as relevant today as it was in 1962.

Under the baton of chief conductor @duncan_ward_conductor , 107 musicians brought this masterpiece to life, together with soloists @jacquelynwagnersoprano, @brett_sprague and @simonbaileybassbaritone, @grootomroepkoor, @studiumchorale and the children’s choir Schola Puerorum. A work this monumental asks a great deal of everyone involved, and it was special to create it together.

Thank you to all the musicians, soloists and singers, and to you in the audience: because of you, these were two unforgettable evenings. 🎻

Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Stravinsky’s Firebird 🔥

This week, the sparks will fly. Philzuid sets the stage ablaze with Stravinsky’s Firebird suite: a pounding heartbeat full of glowing melodies and a big finale that gives you goosebumps.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto brings raw emotion and is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for cello, performed by Belgian-Israeli cellist @liavkerbel. Leading the orchestra is conductor @emiliahoving, a young Finnish talent and one of the few women on the podium at major orchestras. 🎻

Mozart’s Jupiter, the grand finale 🎼

Two excerpts from the final movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter”, often seen as one of the great peaks of classical music.

Mozart weaves several melodies together into one whole, and somehow it all stays wonderfully clear. This is thanks to the fugue, where the same melody enters again and again in different voices, each one rising above the other. Listen for the moment it all comes together in the second excerpt. 👏

@thomasazier is Artist in Residence van November Music 2026. Op donderdag 26 november brengt hij PANORAMA naar de Verkadefabriek: een filmische performance waarin muziek, beeld en dichtkunst samenkomen.

This time, she explores Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. A work in which different string orchestras intertwine, creating a rich dialogue of sound inspired by a melody from the 16th century.

Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps

What a weekend! Under the baton of @duncan_ward_conductor, Philzuid performed Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps in Eindhoven, Utrecht and Heerlen. In 1913, this piece turned Paris upside down. It did the same for us, only out of admiration. 👏

Another highlight was Takemitsu's From Me Flows What You Call Time, with Tromp Percussion and percussion soloist @domniq_music (Dominique Vleeshouwers).

The wind section also stood out in Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. Marjolijn Sengers wrote in her review:
“Respect to the wind section, who captured the enchanting, fairy-tale atmosphere of this work with pitch-perfect precision.”

A look back at a special evening with Philzuid at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Under Duncan Ward’s direction, Dominique Vleeshouwers, Alexandre Esperet, Mike Truesdell, Vassilena Serafimova and Johannes Fischer joined the orchestra for Toru Takemitsu’s From me flows what you call time. Each percussionist represented one of the five elements, drawing us into a world of colour, delicate sounds and silence.⁠

The programme travelled on to Heerlen, where De Limburger gave the concert four stars and described Takemitsu’s work as “een Japanse klanktuin vol subtiele umami” — a Japanese sound garden full of subtle umami.⁠
