I met this amazing young man, @james.kwaksistala from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. He was demonstrating the carving technique on a beautiful piece of cedar wood. He is also a printmaker and the last pic is entitled Wild Woman of the Woods. taken in Campbell River Art Gallery by @photobyjanet

This day we struck gold, led by two brilliant guides from the Klahoose Nation, we spotted bears within fives minutes of arriving at the first of six observation towers dotted long the river. One of those pinch me moments I will never forget. Again I felt so grateful to be in such a beautiful, mystical part of the world. A huge thanks to Mel, our boat captain and the two guides, Glen and Troy. In total we spotted 10 black bears, and 11 brown (grizzlies) bears. taken in Toba Inlet BC Canada by @photobyjanet

Off on my second expedition with Campbell River Whale Watching Tours, this time venturing to the Toba Inlet. Another three hours on the beautiful waterways of British Columbia. The conditions were perfect for spotting whales, we followed a family of orcas as they toyed with a young dolphin, eventually killing it. Amazing to witness. by @photobyjanet

My Airbnb host, Vicci invited me on a hike to see bears, I asked if it was safe. She replied that in her 37 years of walking this trail she has never had a bad encounter. Within minutes of being on the trail we spot our first black bear, then another, then two more fishing in the river. We were just downstream from the Quinsam River Hatchery, lots of lovely fish for the taking! It has become a popular place for nature photographers to observe the bears. And only a ten minute drive from town! taken in Quinsam River Hatchery by @photobyjanet

There is a really vibrant fishing culture here in Campbell River. The Discovery Fishing Pier is a meeting place for many local anglers. They were all catching beautiful salmon, I think this one was a chum. taken in Discovery Fishing Pier by @photobyjanet

My first expedition with the Campbell River Whale Watching tours took us up into the Bute Inlet, about a three hour journey by boat. Lots to see on the water, humpback whales, sea lions and incredible birdlife. Our guides on land were from the Homalco Nation. They had their job cut out for them on this day, we were on land for three hours travelling by bus to different lookout towers hoping to see the bears feasting on the salmon. With five minutes left before we had to return to the boat, we finally spotted a bear, alerted by our youngest member of the group, Audrey, a 12yr old from Brisbane! Then we spotted three more bears! I’ll have to admit it was disheartening not to see many bears, but our time in this beautiful environment was incredibly special. taken in Campbell River, British Columbia by @photobyjanet
