My silk grids are a way of creating a temporary structure within the landscape. A framework for chance encounters. Laid directly onto the ground, the grid becomes a quadrat, a site of attention… and whatever falls within its boundaries becomes part of the work.

I think of Daniel Spoerri’s ‘Topography of Chance’, his mapping of the accidental relationships between things. And of John Cage’s embrace of chance, making space for the things we cannot plan or control.

The silk marks a boundary but nature decides what enters it.

The delicate silk net clings to the rock like a fleeting trace of humanity, holding tightly to the nature we need to survive.

Across the bay from here, I can see the oil refinery gas flare - a constant reminder of our dependence on the earth and the uneasy ways in which we consume it.

Punta Conejo is a renowned surf break along the coastline of Southern Oaxaca and has been at risk from multiple threats, including the construction of an industrial port project - @savethewavescoalition are focused on preserving and safeguarding over 3,500 acres of land, 6.5 miles of coastline and 1,277 acres of mangrove forest.

We’ve been on this stretch of Oaxacan coastline for quite a few days. As I sit on the beach, which happens to be an excellent surf break, across the bay is an oil refinery and behind me the largest sand dune I’ve ever seen - Punta Conejo.

I know I have to response to the juxtaposition of this landscape before we carry on heading south to Guatemala but I’ve not completed the sewing of the net and it keeps raining all day. And then the clouds parted, I finished my silk net, raced up the dune and I found what I was looking for.

It’s my birthday today, this year we’ve driven over 10,000 miles across Europe & the Americas while roadschooling our children in environments as varied & as beautiful as you would expect… yet it’s the human connections across the thousands of miles that have touched my heart the most. I have learnt so much about how I want to be as a human - share more and care more with as many people as possible.

We have another year ahead of us on the road… and I cannot wait! @packlightlyandgo

And remember what our friend @ornamentalconifer said THINGS WON’T CHANGE UNTIL WE DO.

We are bound together not only with one another but with the living systems that sustain us. 🌊

Made in exactly this spot on the Nayarit coast in front of the mighty Pacific Ocean, this wall sculpture is winging its way from Mexico to Los Angeles for the show ‘hardly, softly’ at @sidebitch_la

Life on the road with @packlightlyandgo forces one into the perpetual present moment with only small snippets of time for reflection, writing and sketching but when there is a lull in the journey I have thankfully found there is much to draw from.

And in recent years I have felt very reliant on having a ‘proper’ studio space so I am incredibly excited that I have found a way to make art on the move.

It’s been a month of living by the sea in Baja and now we cross the Sea of Cortez to mainland Mexico… I find myself making observational sketches now, maybe because life is very present living all together in the truck and time to allow the mind to wander, as it did in the studio, does not exist on the road.

Baja Sur is remote, no one is just passing through this peninsula - it has an alluring otherworldly feel to it, as it quietly sits looking out at the great Pacific Ocean.

I’ve finished a new grid for the series Bound Together, made from fabrics collected on our journey so far and sewn together while travelling in the truck - and at the odd laundromat.

This grid is smaller, easier to manoeuvre spontaneously should we pass an inspiring site and crucially it doesn’t take up much space in the truck - we don’t have a lot of spare room.

For now I’m playing around with it, testing it in different environments, making observational sketches and waiting… IYKYK

@packlightlyandgo & I are driving south through the Americas with our two kids & two dogs, if you have an recommendations please share them with us. :)

Bound Together, this idea fills my mind - to reflect a shared authorship between artist & landscape.

In part inspired by John Cage’s ideas of indeterminacy and Daniel Spoerri‘s book of a Topography of Chance, I hope the work allows the landscape, materials and unforeseen conditions to shape its final form.

There she is, up there - Bound Together no.2 - at the @royalacademyarts Summer Show, June 16th - August 23rd. Compulsory pointing photo 👆

My first artwork made since we began living on the road @packlightlyandgo

Today was Varnishing Day… saw art, saw friends, saw friends art, saw friends looking at art. Have to go again to look some more, and again, and probably again.
