Following two further years of house renovations I can finally revisit artworks that have been waiting patiently to be admired and appreciated.
This beautiful piece by Maria Pierides was one that I was reluctant to return after an exhibition, my sister acquired another similar piece from the same series.
When it was time to eventually return the piece, Maria gifted it to me for my big birthday last October.
We have painted this wall using paint left over from the gallery…so I feel I have my own gallery at home now too.

A huge thank you to Rebecca Smith @beerslondon for the lovely critique of my work.

There is a quiet sensitivity running throughout these paintings that feels deeply connected to memory, atmosphere and emotional geography. The work resists direct description, instead operating through gesture, colour and accumulation. The surfaces feel lived - in, layered, scraped back, and reworked in ways that allow traces of earlier decisions to remain visible.
That sense of excavation gives the paintings both emotional depth and a strong physical presence.

The diptych format works particularly well conceptually. The division between canvases creates a subtle psychological tension, reinforcing ideas of separation, migration, and dialogue between places. The space between the panels becomes active rather than empty, holding a sense of distance while simultaneously binding the works together. It mirrors the in-between states you describe in your statement, between cultures, landscapes, times, and identities.
Colour is handled instinctively and with confidence. The warm reds, pinks, ochres and pale blues create atmospheres that feel suspended between dusk and dream - state. At times the paintings verge on landscape, while at others they move towards pure abstraction and this ambiguity is one of the strongest aspects of the work. Rather than depicting place literally, the paintings evoke remembered sensations of place, fragments of light, heat, movement, and emotional residue.
I also appreciated the tactility of the surfaces. Even through documentation, there is is clear material intelligence in the way the paint is layered, dragged, and partially erased. The process itself becomes a metaphor for memory: unstable, cumulative, and impossible to fully resolve. The paintings seem to hold multiple temporalities simultaneously, with older marks continuing to exist beneath newer gestures.
Your statement around migration and. ‘Carrying’ landscape rather that illustrating it feels particularly convincing in relation to the work. Meridian Diptych By Maria Pierides

To get the true sence of scale you have to see the artwork in the flesh… you can then feel the rhythm for the brush strokes, feel the depth of the colours and see the texture of the paint…

Lots of new work in the studio right now as I get ready for next year. I’m enjoying working big, bold and pairing canvas together to open up more possibilities within the paintings. These are 100 x 100cm each. I love how much energy is required in the studio to paint like this 🥵 not to mention the huge amounts of paint that it laps up 💰

Thank you to all that came out for the Open Evening of our SISTERHOOD exhibition on a cold and frosty Thursday evening.
A big thanks to my school friend Alison and my knitting friend Mel for keeping the pot brewing with mulled wine and spiced apple juice. To my sister Jess and Mel (again) of @the.naturetable for dressing the room with their spirited foliage. Thaks for mum for her delicious welsh cake offerings with an autumn twist of cranberry and orange. And another huge thank you to filmmaker Marc Bond @profondomarco for capturing the spirit of the evening after a long shift at the timber yard.
Thank you to all the amazing artists who have given me an exceptional body of work to play with for this wonderful display of friendship, trust and sisterhood.

I’m thrilled to be part of this exhibition. Living in London, I have always been part of something, part of some group. So to move to Wales and to be welcomed into this lovely community of artists has been pretty special and important to me. It lifts my spirit, kicks my ass and drives my practice and I’m looking forward to celebrating with everyone on the night of the opening 🎉

Maria Pierides : Painter : Glynneath
Nothing can get you more excited about getting ready for the next exhibition than visiting the artist in their studio.
I’ve been working with Maria since 2017 and have visited her studio almost annually and it’s always uplifting. I’ve seen her green phase, her red phase, her yellow and her blue phase…. This visit was definitely her most explosively colourful… and I loved it.
Maria has always favoured the square canvas so it was great to see her push out of the square, it seems to be liberating her pallate…literally giving her more room to play. Maria has also cut her painting time down due to other commitments…which is making each hour of painting time more precious, each stroke seems even more determined…
I can’t wait to get these pieces to the gallery ready for our forthcoming exhibition - SISTERHOOD.
