It is hard to imagine losing a place.

For six years we came to this place, as a family of three, creating a tradition filled with lasting memories. We learned to hike. We learned to fish. We slept in our first bunkbed and saw our first moose. We made new friends, enjoyed meals and songs around the campfire, and had heaps of french fries with plenty of ketchup.

For six years we made the journey up here, never once thinking that we wouldn’t be able to do it again the next year.

At this point we don’t know if anyone will be able to access this land after this year, and it is so hard to think that we have just lost one of our most memorable family traditions.

Piney River Ranch, you will surely be missed. Thank you for the memories, the views, the fresh air and friends, and of course, the ketchup.

The florals framed everything we love about Piney River Ranch. 🌼🏔️

Daisies, chamomile, and loose garden blooms surrounded the ceremony without competing with the view, almost creating a window onto the lake and mountains beyond. Simple, natural, and exactly right for a setting this beautiful.

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to a place like this. 💔🏔️

Piney Lake and @pineyriverranch have been part of so many Colorado memories over the years. The incredible views of the Gore Range, the peaceful water, the mountain air, and those moments when you stop, take it all in, and remember just how lucky we are to live in a place like this.

Like so many others, I’ve loved spending time here, capturing its beauty and experiencing what makes it so special.

The news that @pineyriverranch is closing its operations after being unable to reach a long-term lease agreement with @denver_water is incredibly disappointing. It’s a reminder that even the places we think will always be there aren’t guaranteed to stay the same.

I know there are complicated decisions involved, but it’s still heartbreaking to think about losing the experience of visiting a place that has meant so much to so many people.

Colorado’s outdoors are part of what makes this state so special. I hope we continue to find ways to protect these incredible places and preserve opportunities for people to experience them for years to come.

The last wedding at Piney River Ranch. 🤎 I keep trying to find the right words for this day, knowing they’ll only ever hold a little of what it actually felt like to be there. Some places become part of you before you realize it. Piney, as it was, is one of those places.

For years, I admired photos of that lake beneath the mountains, hoping to photograph a couple there someday. Last year, I finally did. Watching the sun go down for the first time literally left me in tears. I knew it would be beautiful. I didn’t know I’d leave so connected to a place I had only just met.

It was Monique, Holly, and their team’s warmth. The care that made everyone feel welcome. Sunsets that made you stop everything. A family of moose quietly sharing this corner of the world.

Just one year, and saying goodbye feels this tender. My heart is with everyone who loved Piney longer, who built a life, a community, or their most cherished memories here.

Graham and Amelia, witnessing you begin your marriage in a place you love, on a day that held so much meaning, was an honor I’ll always carry. Thank you for trusting me with your people and memories. I hope your photographs always bring you back to how it felt, surrounded by so much love.

Monique and Holly, thank you for opening your hearts and sharing this place. So much of what made Piney special came from you. Your love will live on in every story told, every photograph held, and everyone lucky enough to feel at home here.

A Little Piece of Colorado Autumn 🍂

I’m delighted to introduce my newest ink and watercolor painting, Piney River Ranch in the Fall.

In the summer of 2023, Caroline and I spent a wonderful day at Piney River Ranch, near Vail, Colorado, with dear friends visiting from New Zealand. One of our fondest memories was taking a canoe out onto Piney Lake, surrounded by the magnificent Gore Range mountains.

My daughter Amy is a professional wedding photographer and has photographed many weddings and engagements at Piney River Ranch over the years. When she heard that the Ranch's current operators would be concluding their operations at the end of the 2026 summer season, she suggested that I paint it as a memory for so many who have special memories there.

Although we visited in summer, I decided to imagine the scene in autumn, with golden aspens, snow-dusted mountain peaks and those familiar green canoes resting beside the dock.

The result is this little 10 × 8-inch painting, created in black India ink and watercolor.

I hope it brings back some happy memories for those of you who have visited this beautiful place!
