For a brief window each February, a waterfall in Yosemite can appear to turn into FIRE. πŸ”₯πŸ’§

This is Horsetail Fall, a small seasonal waterfall that flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. During mid-to-late February, the setting sun can illuminate the falling water from behind, producing an intense orange, red, and golden glow that makes the waterfall look almost like molten lava. There is, of course, no fire involvedβ€”it’s a natural lighting phenomenon.

Seeing it at its best requires several conditions to line up at once. Horsetail Fall must actually be flowing, the sky near sunset needs to be sufficiently clear, and the Sun must be positioned at the right seasonal angle. Even haze or clouds can weaken or completely eliminate the effect.

And it’s far from guaranteed. The National Park Service notes that the spectacular glow occurs only during a short period around sunset, and in some years favorable conditions may occur on very few evenings.

It’s an incredible example of how water, sunlight, landscape, and perfect timing can transform an ordinary waterfall into something that looks almost impossible.

Would you travel to Yosemite just to witness this? πŸ”₯πŸ”οΈ

DHAB most commonly refers to a Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basin, but it can also mean an automotive current sensor, a desert lizard, or a village.

Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basin (DHAB)What it is: A pool of extra-salty (hypersaline) water at the bottom of the ocean that contains no oxygen (anoxic).

How it forms: Long-buried salt deposits dissolve into water on the seafloor, creating a dense brine that sinks into ocean valleys and does not mix with the normal seawater above it.

Life inside: Only specialized microscopic organisms (anaerobes) that do not need oxygen can survive there. You can learn more about these extreme environments through the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The life-sized Spinosaurus statue at the Odaiba Dinosaur Expo in Japan is a highly detailed, 15-meter-long reconstruction showcasing modern scientific understanding, including its semi-aquatic features like a crocodile-like snout and large tail. While featuring an animatronic head with realistic movement, its body was inflatable, allowing for an incredibly vivid and immersive, if somewhat unconventional, display.

The alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) is one of North America’s largest freshwater fish and one of its oldest surviving fish lineages.

Growing to more than 3 meters (10 feet) in length and weighing over 135 kg (300 pounds), this apex predator has inhabited North American rivers for millions of years.

Its ancestors date back to the Early Cretaceous, more than 100 million years ago, meaning gars shared the planet with non-avian dinosaurs. Their elongated jaws, armor-like ganoid scales, and ambush hunting strategy have remained remarkably successful through deep time.

Although their appearance is intimidating, alligator gars rarely pose a threat to people. Instead, they play an important role in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems by helping regulate fish populations.

A true living relic from the Age of Dinosaurs. πŸ¦–πŸŸ
