So, LinkedIn has informed me that this week marks 14 years since Polymath came into existence.

Whenever this anniversary comes by, my first thoughts are "thank you." To the clients that trusted me, the outlets who have covered them for me, and the institutions who have hired me or counted me among their members, but above all to the amazing people who have given me incredible opportunities over the years. I've done nearly everything I've wanted to do and more because of people, and I'm eternally grateful to them all.

I never studied at university, and I don't recall studying PR as part of my music course at college. I was born and raised in a tiny village in rural Lincolnshire, primarily on benefits. No one close to me or in my family worked in the entertainment industry, and i was bullied mercilessly in school, leaving me with severe social anxiety and no confidence.

All I wanted was to go work in the music industry full time at a time when everyone was told that to do so, you had to live in London. If 23 year old me, full of uncertainty and feeling alone, was here, I'd give him a big hug and tell him he'll be OK. I'd tell him he has a lot of healing, learning, and failing to do, but that he will find a lot of friends along the way.

If you're reading this and in need of a fresh start, go for it. No, it isn't a straight line and I don't pretend to know the living or financial circumstances of everyone reading this, but if you know where you want to go, and believe in your vision, start. You can move slow, just make sure you move. Start surrounding yourself with good people, not just people who give you a feeling of familiarity. Find people doing better than you and learn from them.

You will face rejection, and it will not be personal. Accept it, learn from it, and move on. Be kind to your mind. Don't kill yourself, because no job is worth your health. Be grateful, but not a doormat. There's a difference between an opportunity and slave labour. Above all, make sure it and the people around you add value to your life. Otherwise, they're meaningless.

You'll be OK.
