POSTS STORIES REELS

A thousand new faces have joined us recently, so let me introduce myself properly. I'm Jorge, and I'm a little obsessed with 15th-century printing. This is where I share the process of recreating late medieval books using woodcut and letterpress, with traditional tools and techniques. That's Prelo Prints, and I'm glad you're here! ✨

Whether you're interested in printmaking, book history, typography, woodcut, or simply enjoy watching something made "the old way," I hope you'll find something here that inspires you.

I'd love to know: what brought you here? Let me know in the comments below!

The Apocalypse is now available in the Prelo Prints webshop.

This new hand-printed woodcut, inspired by a 15th-century German blockbook, is presented in its first edition of 25 impressions, including six individually hand-coloured prints.

👑 Additionally, every copy comes with a handmade oak branch woodblock print. Explore the new print in the webshop – link in bio.

🩸Painting with Dragon’s blood

From the start, my idea with this print was to colour a select number of copies to match the originals. As is my practice, I always use pigments to colour prints (or paint in general) instead of ready-made watercolours or gouaches, because I want to stay as close as possible to the originals without compromising. If a specific medieval pigment is poisonous or dangerous, I use modern, safe equivalents, but the process remains the same: mixing the pigment with a binder, usually gum arabic, to create watercolours.

This is the first of three posts exploring the primary colours used in my hand-colourized Apocalypse prints. Next: green.

Painting with green earth 🟢

The second color to be applied is the green(-ish) for the robes and other details.

Painting with ochre(s) 🟠 🟡

The third main color for this print is yellow, or in this case… yellows. It has been such a great pleasure playing with pigments and gum again after so much time focusing solely on the block with gouges and knives.

This is the last of three posts exploring the primary colours used in my hand-coloured Apocalypse prints.

The Apocalypse takes shape on paper.

Today I made the first proper print run of the new Apocalypse block. This edition is limited to just 25 prints, each hand-printed on handmade cream laid paper from @papiersruscombe.

Some of the prints will later be hand-coloured, following the style of the original woodcut prints and block book.

The prints will be available in the webshop by the end of the month. If you’re interested in owning one, let me know in the comments or send me a message. As always, thank you for following along and supporting my work. 🙌

I had already revealed this proof print with photos, but here’s a short video of the proofing of this woodcut.

This is a cherrywood block with a page from the Apocalypse block book (Bodleian Library, Auct. M 3.14). This block took me around 65 hours and more than four months to cut. Enjoy!

PROOF PRINT /// After months of work on this block, I’m thrilled to reveal the proof print. I’m quite pleased with the result. The text turned out better than I hoped, many of the weight variations in the letters match the original. I didn’t aim for perfection here, but rather for a faithful reproduction of the original page in the Apocalypse block book (Bodleian Library, Auct. M 3.14).

This proof print is on common draft paper. The real print run on handmade linen-laid paper will happen soon. Some copies will also be hand colored with pigments just as the original. If you’re interested in a copy, let me know in the comments below or send me a message! 📜

Next week, Prelo Prints will take part in @maribocraftdays, a local festival celebrating craftsmanship, creativity, art, design, and community.

For one week, Maribo becomes a citywide creative workshop, with exhibitions, workshops, talks, and other activities across the town. The event brings together craftspeople, artists, makers, cultural institutions, schools, and visitors, with a focus on making by hand, sharing knowledge, and creating together.

I will participate on Thursday and Friday, 8- 9 October, from 10:00 to 17:00 at Vestergade 33 (The Green House). I’ll demonstrate woodblock printing and discuss the historical techniques behind my work. Come by, have a look, ask questions, and say hello.

I recently dug up this …ahem… woodcut which I made back in 2014, and I had completely forgotten about. Talking about humble beginnings. ;)
